Title: Those Isles of Yours (that wait for me) Author: fmpsimon (on AO3) Fandom: Haikyu!! Relationship: Kageyama Tobio/Hinata Shoyo Rating: E Summary: Sugawara made a bet and Kageyama took it. If Kageyama loses, he has to teach Sugawara’s worst student until he passes his swimming certification. He had no idea that losing that bet would completely change his life. He had learned how to swim as a child, so giving special attention to Suga’s worst student seemed like something he could handle. What he didn’t expect was that student to be Hinata Shoyo, someone he’d known when he was a child, someone he’d abandoned, and someone he’d, frankly, forgotten about. But what he hadn’t realized is that even though he’d forgotten Hinata, he’d carried that guilt with him his entire life.

“Admit what?” Kageyama’s face felt hot, his heart was pounding in his chest. This had to be because of the alcohol, right? “That you like me,” Hinata said with a crooked smile. “That’s ridiculous,” Kageyama said, but even he was starting to doubt himself. There was something about Hinata that seemed really…sexy tonight. He smelled like booze and sweat and cheap cologne, his hair was matted with perspiration, sticking to his forehead, and then there was that smirk on his face. Somehow he found all of it irresistible right now.

“Are you dating anyone, Sensei?” Hinata said at length. Kageyama felt suddenly flustered. So, Hinata had a girlfriend; he was supposed to be with her right now, and that ticked Kageyama off. The only problem was, he didn’t know why. Hinata wasn’t really anyone to him, just some guy he was teaching to swim. They really weren’t even friends; the relationship was that of a teacher and student—nothing more, nothing less. Right? He scowled inwardly. He was just lying to himself. He was interested in Hinata—in some way, he wanted to know more about him, to get closer to him, and it really pissed him off that Hinata might be in a relationship already. “No,” he replied. “Why? Are you?”

He felt comfortable in the cool, clear water, like coming home, even though he had never been much of a swimmer. He had taken classes when he was little: a pool full of awkward little boys and girls learning how to float on their backs and kick the water from the safety of boogie boards. He had aced all his swimming exams, of course, and could have probably done it semi-professionally had he really had an interest in it. No, volleyball was his true passion, but that didn't really pay the bills at 32 years old. He managed to play on the side, though, which was of some comfort as he approached middle-age, and was single and working his ass off at a job that barely paid the rent of his luxury apartment. So, if volleyball was his passion, then what was he doing swimming laps in the tightest swimwear he'd ever worn? He burst out of the water and ran his hands over his face. He regretted not bringing goggles, but this had been rather spur of the moment, and he was just lucky that Suga was able to lend him an old pair of swimming trunks. It was the least he could do for the loser of that stupid bet, the bet that Kageyama had lost.
