So everyone including me was so ready for a Peridot+Lapis fusion and I was sure we’d finally see it in the movie. But when it wasn’t it forced me to consider that the companionship between Peridot and Lapis doesn’t have to be that way. And it was important for me to remember that Lapis has had an unhealthy and abusive fusion relationship in the past that has caused her trauma. And it was also important to understand that because of this reason, she may not be ready, or may never be ready for another fusion and that’s ok.
I can’t wish for a fusion from just because it’ll be fun when it would involve a character with such a complex history towards the subject.
I love this narrative that Rebecca Sugar has created around Lapis. She is a key part in the conversation of emotional complexity that the show brings up. And emotional healing as well. In the later episodes, we see Lapis happy, smiling, and enjoying her country life with Peridot. When we see that, it’s easy for a lot of us to forget her difficult past. Being used in a war, imprisoned in a mirror, having her gem cracked, kept away from her home, and how she is captured and used again when she finally does get home, her fusion with Jasper, living at the bottom of the ocean with someone she hates, and living in a strange place and accepting that you may never go home again. That’s a LOT. And she managed to pull through and learn to love herself and her life. And now she spends her time every day doing the things she loves in the place that she loves with the people she loves.
Lapis’s story is so important. Especially towards understanding and addressing issues such as depression and PTSD. The road to healing is long and difficult but work and self love will get you to where you want to be.
