Sylens from HZD

First impression

I remember reading something in a news article about how his character was a mysterious contact for Aloy, so I was immediately interested and later glad that this description did not disappoint! Sylens is my Type TM to a ridiculous degree

Impression now

I’m not writing HZD fic on my own right now and would want to be very aware of the ‘exoticism’ aspect of the Banuk if I were ever to go back to that. I’m also still in love with the complexity of Sylens’ character, how he both exemplifies and resists the competitive landscape he grew up in, and the few cracks in his cold surface. More people need to write Aloy/Sylens, she insists fruitlessly.

Favorite moment

Everything at Sunfall, from the initial exposition to the rescue, and the fact that he gifts Aloy with like three things in the course of two or three missions

Idea for a story

Ugh every once in a while I go back to thinking about a story where Ourea and Sylens met before he was exiled. Maybe it would just be a longer version of the canon-compliant conversation I’ve already written. Maybe it would be an AU where he ends up meeting CYAN and all of his plans change.

I’m also super keen on dark!Aloy as a queen of the Shadow Carja at Sunfall, with Sylens as her advisor/spymaster/lover and their intrigues and on-again, off-again romance 

Unpopular opinion

Shrug emoji I don’t think “characterization is complicated” is an especially unpopular opinion … I guess Aloy/Sylens as a ship is, and I’ve written a bit before about how I write them and why. 

Favorite relationship

Aloy, obviously! Their voices are so different and I really love their dialogue, whether that’s in canon or in fic. 

Favorite headcanon

It takes him a while to get used to falling asleep with his own glowing piercings as a night light. This was something nobody warned him about before the training, and there’s some symbolism in there about the light of knowledge that he thinks about in his more navel-gazing moments: once pierced you can’t unsee what you’ve learned, can’t undo the bruises of it…until one of the thin pipes cracks when he takes a hard fall, and the kinetic energy dies, and the substance inside it goes dark.
