Tistou Les Pouces Verts (Tistou of the Green Thumbs), by Maurice Druon

Written in 1957, this is the story of Tistou, a child who can make flowers sprout wherever his hand lands. Tistou uses his power to help adults around him to bear the difficult aspects of life, such as war and sadness.

It received a good following in Brazil and in Japan, being one of Hayao Miyazaki's favorite books and receiving an anime adaptation in 1990.
