David Attenborough uncovers a record-breaking plant at Kew Gardens: a Titan Arum, with a huge tuba that emerges from within the plant once every seven years! Amorphophallus titanum, the titan arum, is a flowering plant in the family Araceae. It has the largest unbranched inflorescence in the world. The inflorescence of the talipot palm, Corypha umbraculifera, is larger, but it is branched rather than unbranched. A. titanum is endemic to Sumatra. #3681 - Amorphophallus titanum - Titan Arum
We happened to arrive in Christchurch on the same day the Titan Arum at the Botanical Gardens was in bloom. Given the other common name is Corpse Flower, having it a meter away from the cafe was certainly A Choice. Fortunately it was behind glass, and just as well since the horrendous reek of putrefying flesh and feces is easily detectable 800 meters away.
First discovered and described in 1878 by the Italian botanist Odoardo Beccari. The binomial translates as Giant Misshapen Dick although if your dick is this shape and colour I urgently suggest you see a doctor.
In the wild it grows only in rainforest-covered limestone hills in Western Sumatra, sprouting a single branching tree-sized leaf from an enormous underground tuber, and after about 7 years storing enough energy to bloom. The flowerspike is the largest infloresence of any plant, up to 3m tall, covered with thousands of tiny male flowers on the upper part, and female flowers around the base.
When flowering, which it will do for a very few days, the plant heats up to 37C, to volatise the various chemicals it produces to attract carrion insects, and further increase the illusion that it's a large fresh corpse.
Flowerings in captivity can attract crowds of thousands of visitors, despite the smell. The smell is probably why it was the official flower of the Bronx from 1937 to 2000.

Amorphophallus titanum (Becc.) or known as Titan Arum or giant corpse flower or THE LEGENDARY bunga bangkai raksasa at Bogor Botanical Gardens. It was finally blooming again since 2014.
