Well now I feel bad for the Titan Spinner, too :< She's just a single mom...
Did you do some kinda research on spider behavior while writing this chapter?
Hello!
I did! On a few different spiders actually and realized spiders have a vast variety of ways to display certain kinds of behaviors and no two spiders are really the same in how they do it. The bigger the spider the more complex the behavior, and so I had a little more fun with it when I realized Titan Spinner, unlike most spiders, would have more mental capacity for complex intelligence due to her size and evolutionary mutation from virus exposure.
So I wanted to show that in the story as best as I could. She's sympathetic and capable of caretaking behaviors, it's just really limited because she still is a predator but she's more affectionate than the average spider and capable of more emotional bonding than the average spider (which most spiders aren't capable of emotional attachment or bonding, but some more intelligent spiders like jumping spiders are capable of recognizing human handlers as not threats and food keepers so they create symbiotic relationships with their handlers).
Titan Spinner (in my interpretation through Wolves & Crows) is capable of asexual reproduction. She can inseminate and fertilize her own eggs as she produces and lays them. However, her infatuation with Zeno is the promise of evolutionary improvement through additional genetic material and the addition of a new virus mutation. Similar to how the more advanced viruses in Raccoon City gravitated towards potential hosts to spread and evolve, Titan Spinner's is doing the same thing by chasing the positive pheromones output coming from Zeno. To her, he smells amazing just like he smells amazing to the Hound Wolf Squad and Chris.
Because they are compatible. His genetics could help improve and strengthen her spawn. However, his virus recognizes that she's dangerous. She will inevitably eat him or feed him to her spawn when they hatch. It warns him away from her because there is no positive outcome in this situation for him.
From Titan Spinner's perspective, he is a young male. Most male spiders are much smaller than their female counterparts. So him being tiny compared to her is actually normal for spiders, which is why breeding is so dangerous for the male spiders. Since Titan Spinner's first encounters with Zeno involved him wearing his usual in game outfit with the black jacket on the back, she mistook him for being a juvenile male at first that was approaching sexual maturity (his pheromones being compatible at the time telling her this). Since her young adolescent spiderlings are all white and Zeno is white and black, he's gaining his adult coloring in her perspective.
Then the next time she sees him, he's wearing the all black jumpsuit (fully matured male) and his pheromones are stronger but he smells sick. She's worried he is dying, but he is still capable of passing along his genetic material to her for the next generation of spiderlings. So she takes Zeno back to her nest to care for him and try to coax him into using his pedipalps (the forelimbs beside the spider's fangs that hold semen for the males when mating) to transfer his genetic material to her. (Her posturing in front of him to expose her abdominal opening where semen is stored in a special pouch that she can self inseminate whenever she needs to later on when laying her eggs), but Zeno isn't doing anything.
She mistakes his arms (the left arm that's not restrained) for being his pedipalps. He tries to push her away and she mistakes this for his attempt to reach for her but he's too weak to finish the job. She's growing more concerned and frustrated, trying to groom him and stimulate him into more activity by laying her eggs around him in the hopes he'll do what she wants.
In the end, she planned on feeding him to her children whether he survives this encounter or not, and since he's already sick and dying, she doesn't see the issue here. She just needs him to mate her first before the hatchlings feed on his corpse. She cares but only to the extent of using him for what all male spiders are useful for which is improving the next generation of spiderlings then feeding them with their corpse if she sees fit.
I did a lot of spider research just for Zeno to be oblivious to 90% of it but I tried to show as much through her behavior as I could so for those who do understand spider anatomy and behavior a bit, they might recognize it for the environmental storytelling aspect it became.
I hope that answered the question but feel free to ask more! I love talking about the bioweapon anatomy and interactions of the infected ecosystem of Raccoon City in Wolves & Crows.
RESIDENT EVIL REQUIEM kicked so much ass it was stupid. Currently playing Insanity and its absolutely brutal

Titan Spinner was acting unusual and Zeno was given orders by the scientists -as arrogant of a decision as that was on their part- to go investigate why the bioweapon’s behavior had abruptly changed. He was not pleased with this new directive, and given the lucrative nature of the bioweapon in question, his superiors in The Connections backed the decision. He ultimately had no say.
Again.
Grinding his teeth in displeasure, Zeno wilted beneath the demands with the relief that at least this promised him a little more freedom and far less supervision yet again.
For insanity, the jacket stays on
