Lucas met them as a Magnemite in Fuego Ironworks.

After he beat Volkner, Lucas took the time to train some of his other Pokemon (outside of his usual team) to try to give himself more options going into the Elite Four and Cynthia. Titan was one of these Pokemon.

It was through training them and one other Pokemon that Lucas realized that he might have some kind of affinity with Steel type Pokemon. This is one of the little things that would eventually cause him to realize his connection with Dialga.
