The mysterious sand dunes of Titan. The dunes on Titan are oriented in the opposite direction of the wind on its surface. Recent studies indicate that dunes hold this shape and are not affected by winds because of electrified ⚡️ sand. . However, unlike sand in Earth that is made of silicon dioxide, Titan’s sand is composed of small granules of water ice 💧 that is surrounded by hydrocarbons existing on its surface and atmosphere. Geophysical experiments show that sand of this type can acquire electric charge, thus explaining why dunes on Titan hold so well together. . Recent radar data by the Cassini spacecraft revealed a large dark patch on the face of Saturn’s moon Titan. This region is called Shangri-La - named after the mythical mountain city in James Hilton’s novel Lost Horizon. The Huygens probe landed in the west of Shangri-La and photographs revealed a vast mostly dry terrain scarred with dunes shaped by sharp winds. However, unlike the dunes that exist on hot deserts on Earth, these dunes exist in a vast frigid lowland that once could have been an ocean of small hydrocarbons such as liquid methane and ethane. .
