"You Are the Rainbow of My Life" by Sir Victor Uwaifo & His Titibitis
I have no real idea why I like this horribly sweet song from Nigeria's Victor Uwaifo so much and have even less of an idea who or what his titibitis are. The recording quality is pretty abysmal, almost as though it was transferred from a very cheap cassette tape found in the hold of a sunken ship. It's only packaged with a second song (Let's Dance) that has about half the charm of "You are the Rainbow" and worse still, also a frickin' flute solo. DO NOT get me started on how much I hate flute solos. The lyrics to "Rainbow" are syrupy simple and repetitive, and the female voice in it is often so shrill its kind of painful to hear ("are weeeeee to look for your smile in the lightning"?). So if all of that hasn't sold you yet ...
After a half dozen or more listens to the song, I love the heck out of it without apology. There's just something about how the shrillness plays off of Victor's sing-song lyrics when combined with the odd xylophone bits and horn section that makes it resonate for me with a surprising sincerity..
Victor's still alive and kicking at 72, and while his Facebook and Wiki pages contain a few bits of great background on him, it's his web site that's the true treasure of info on his life and work. Sections of particular note include the tributes page featuring many letters of congratulations--including from his urologist, the "revelation tourist palazzo" which Victor operates that features a hall of mannequin gore caller the "City of Blood" exhibition, and his Legacy Hall of Fame highlighting various awards and items from his career. Both of the later two seem to be located at his compound, which also has a fricking grounded plane attached to it as a rumpus/meeting room.
