The Greatest Treasure of All
While there were many, many rumors surrounding the late Whitney Houston before her tragic death in 2012, more than a few of them involved how she would overcome her less than successful attempts to regain lost public affection in her later years.
Perhaps one of the most surprising--and almost certainly completely fabricated ones--was that she had decided to hitch her star to the same rocket that shot Johnny Depp to box office heights.
While her biggest hit may have been her rendition of "I Will Always Love You," it was her first chart-topper "The Greatest Love of All" that truly launched her as a superstar. Looking to repeat and top that historic single, absolutely no one expected her to ever chose to perform Sharkman Frank's 2005 hit "The Most Precious Treasure" as her way back into the public's heart.
Sadly, Whitney died before that improbable pirate phase became a reality. Thankfully, I can always hear her roaring crescendo of "batten the hatches, here comes hurricane" in my dreams.
A Hipster Nerd Goldmine
There's so much going for Robbi, Tobbi und das Fliewatüüt that it's almost hard to imagine how DVDs of it haven't yet become some type of hipster nerd currency. Let's run through just a few of the many, many things that make this odd wonder ripe for the nerdgasm.
The two main characters are a boy inventor and a fricking talking robot!
Both characters--in fact every character--are puppets.
The boy and the robot travel in a vehicle that's a combination helicopter, boat, and car ... that is also a puppet.
Rather than relying on the hokey novelty of miniature sets like the Thunderbirds or something, it often used a fricking blue screen for the puppet's backgrounds.
Instead of being conceived to sell toys or cereal, it's based on a German children's book written by an artist as his first foray into literature
There were only FOUR episodes of the show made in total and it originally ran for just one month in 1972.
It has a surprisingly cool soundtrack that for some reason can be found on Spotify nearly 42 years after it was released.
If this thing was American, there would have been three "reboots" by now with the most recent one coming from Dreamworks. Instead we'll have to make due with watching it in the original German and crying just a little because there's almost nothing better than a boy inventor and his robot puppet.
