2 Chainz - Trapavelli Tre review

Five years to the day after the release of the second installment in the Trapavelli mixtape series, 2 Chainz has released the third. Weighing in at 16 tracks in length, all of which are the thumpy, larger-than-life tracks that listeners have all learned to expect. 

While certainly not lacking in the integral trap material, staying power is unfortunately absent.Many listeners could easily find that the release warrants only a mere one or two listens, neither of which would be particularly exciting. 

“Neighborhood” is the opening track, the purpose of which is typically to entice the listener to want to progress through the rest of the mixtape. Does it do its job here? Sorta. It’s a one-hundred percent average 2 Chainz song and while it will get one’s feet tapping and head bobbing, I can’t recall a single lyric from it, excluding the hook. 

“I Feel Like” has a catchy hook (courtesy of a nice feature from Kevin Gates), but the catchiness is hurt by the amount of times it’s used in the song - it eventually becomes repetitive and exhausting/tedious to hear. In the same song, 2 Chainz disappointingly recycles the “foreigns only” one-liner from his verse on “Fuck ‘Em” from Rick Ross’s Rich Forever mixtape of 2012. 

The piano on “El Chapo, Jr.” sounds like a Fischer Price toy, or even a car interior dinging while that asshole passenger refuses to put on their seatbelt. “Lapdance in the Trap House” is plenty fun, and the hook would have been annoying but was thankfully kept brief and only used twice. “Halo (Letter From My Unborn Son)” is a bizarre and unnecessary track written from his unborn son’s perspective whilst in the womb.

The instrumentals are repetetive, and aside from Wiz Khalifa’s verse on “A Milli Billi Trilli” and the over-uses Gates hook on “I Fee Like”, the feature performances here are almost entirely useless and add no feeling of character or identity. They do not add or subtract from the quality of the tape. 

The strengths here, however, are plain to see when 2 Chainz is left to himself ona strong instrumental backbone. “Big Meech Era”, “If I Didn’t Rap”, and “BFF” are all outstanding tracks and are definitely worth hearing. However, it unfortunately takes more than a handful of tracks out of sixteen to save a release, and the rest of Trapavelli Tre is packed with filler. 

While decent fun, this mixtape simply feels like it was released only to keep the 2 Chainz name relevant in between proper full-length albums.
