Hacking Gatherings for Meaningful Experiences - MusicMakers HackLab TJ / All My Friends 2014
Collaboration, innovation, open dialogue, interaction, hacking, music, foodies, Tijuana, Berlin and Rosarito Beach. What do all of these have in common?
It’s called the MusicMakers HackLab, an event/project originally created within DISK’s CTM by Berlin-based music and live visual artist, journalist and teacher, Peter Kirn. It is a 3 day laboratory where music-minded hackers, creatives and technologists collaborate in the making and discovering of new forms of music-enabling gadgets, tools and processes.
This June, music-makers and hackers of sorts will gather in Tijuana to create some DIY electronic music wizardry. The end of this three day workshop/laboratory - which will be hosted at TJ in China Project Space (in Tijuana’s famous “La Revu” and which deserves a separate post for itself) - marks the beginning of yet another wonderful part of this thickening plot of goodness. Music instruments and gadgets created at MusicMakers HackLab TJ will be presented during the new summer edition of All My Friends Music Festival #AMFV, one of most refreshing independent festivals south of the U.S. border that promotes emerging musical acts (local, national and international).
The delight of listening to fresh MM HL experiments and a fine musical lineup will only be magnified by the scenery in which it will take place - at only a few steps from the ocean (Castillos del Mar, Rosarito Beach) - and by the delicious #CocinaCentral, a foodie’s paradise that will be featuring chefs from the emerging culinary scene of Baja California.

We talked to some of the collaborating organizers of these upcoming happenings and found out that they share the vision of creating gatherings where the experience is about people interacting with each other in meaningful ways while, at the same time sharing and enjoying what makes their worlds turn (in many’s case: music and food).
Cultural producer Paloma Lopez - one of the proponents of bringing MusicMakers HackLab to Tijuana, sees an opportunity to create something beyond an event in which attendees passively consume what is given to them: “the experience can be much more fruitful because you can get involved in a more active and didactic way. You collect learning experiences and contacts, you share what you know and then there is a special stage to show your work.”
"Another side of the equation is about opening this conversation about music in unconventional ways which help our music community to keep growing in experience and knowledge," says Argenis Garcia (All My Friends founder).
All that said, let it be known that there are a few more spots open to participate in the MusicMakers HackLab Tijuana summer edition. So, all of you out there wanting to fulfill your life-long Tijuana-experience dreams, check out the detailed info below. You will be enchanted by the likes of Leslie Garcia and Michael Trigilio, MMHL workshop guides, and by the lovely people of TJ in China Project Space. Don’t forget to bring your friends to make the All My Friends Music Festival a more colorful and enriching experience. For the foodies (aren’t we all?), you will thank yourself for many years to come that you decided to discover #CocinaCentral & all of the above mentioned goodness.
A big “Right On!” to all of you who are making things happen (MMHL_TJ, #AMFV, #CocinaCentral, NRML and more).

[It’s about the] mobility of this space, not this permanence. ‘Oh, what's going to happen? It's going to fall down!' [in different voice] It won't fall down. The space is Mely and me working on it. It's not the physical walls, you know?
