“What just happened?”
“Fucking bastard,” she cursed as she rinsed her hands with cold water. The blisters were smarting horribly but the water helped heal her mermaid flesh, not completely but well enough.
During the event, Kai thought she saw the hooded figures acting too well organized. It was too late. By the time she realised, they reached for her friends. She was pushed forward and tripped onto the burning coals. She used her hands for support but when she got back on her feet, her palms were full of burns and her friends were gone.
She gingerly wrapped her hands in bandages and turned to the people around her. It was then she saw a familiar face. She ran. The person was covered in as many injuries as she was; possibly more. “Here, let me help.”
Bringing a hand to hold her side, Elena winced as she let out a shaky breath. Everything happened so quickly. But even with how quickly the events unfolded, that didn’t stop her from feeling incredibly disappointed in herself. After so long of her practicing magic being frowned upon, only really beginning to use it once again in the past few months, that had been her moment to really do something good with it; and she failed. When she saw someone clearly in pain, she pushed herself to stand up from the ground and moved to offer to help them. “Maybe you should sit down.”
