Part 24
And the Shed— No. Not yet.
That place doesn’t enter quietly.
It enters the way nightmares do.
Abruptly. Breathing. Already hungry.
Royal preferred games.
That sounds almost harmless. It wasn't.
Games have winners.
His had survivors.
He liked making children choose.
Not because the choice mattered.
Because watching you make it did.
Scream or somebody else would.
Choose. Or he'd choose for you.
Move Don't move. Answer. Don't answer. Every option cost something.
That was the game.
It wasn't about getting it right.
It was about discovering there wasn't a right answer.
Only consequences you hadn't imagined yet.
Royal had an imagination.
That's the part that never left me.
Pain wasn't enough. Fear wasn't enough. Yesterday's nightmare wasn't enough.
He was always looking for something new.
Some reaction he hadn't seen.
Some sound he hadn't heard.
Some piece of another human being he hadn't broken quite that way before.
You could see it. The curiosity.
The way his eyes lingered like somebody solving a puzzle.
Not: How do I hurt them?
More: I wonder what happens if...
And eventually you understood the worst thing about Royal wasn't what he knew.
It was what he wondered.
