There’s the obvious, Annabelle straight up said the fears move into a new world that will be tormented as this one was before the apocalypse started. A NEW apocalypse could start, and the fears will move to another world, and on and on it will go unless they’re trapped in a single one and forced to die entirely.
I do think that, despite this, they will decide to go with Annabelle’s offer and live with the guilt. There’s no way this ends fairly, but there are BILLIONS of humans that do not deserve this, so I think, they will at least try, and I can’t blame them.
But that’s not the only catch, “live with the guilt” is still TOO GOOD of an ending. There’s more.
I do not think Annabelle is lying, that’s not what the Web does. I DO THINK she’s omitting details or speaking indirectly, as she does. What’s really getting me, is this line in particular:
“Jon would lose much of himself, the parts of him that are The Eye. But he would survive. And perhaps more importantly, he would remain who he believes himself to be.”
I don’t like how this is phrased
“He would remain who he believes himself to be” not who he IS. Who he BELIEVES himself to be. that’s not. Necessarily good. Who does Jon believe himself to be? A villain? A monster? Jon does not think highly of himself, and that HAS to be considered in Annabelle’s offer. I don’t like it. I don’t think it’s implying Jon will become anything good once the world is saved.
But that’s not the only catch
2. Someone has to light the fucking gas main
Love how vague Annabelle was about this, let’s think about it practically, “all it takes is a single ignition” and it will explode. The only way to ignite it is with a HANDHELD lighter. You’re going to have to get really close, and you will not escape in time. The person who lights the gas main, will not be okay
So, who’s gonna light it?
It can’t be Jon, we already know that, Jon has to be in the panopticon Ceaselessly Watching Jonah (also side note: the synchronization this is going to take will be fucking insane) While I don’t think it’ll be a cult member as it should be someone we know, I could see one volunteering and then getting overruled. Basically, it’s gonna have to be one of the crew
Martin. It’s gonna be Martin
I don’t know if Martin will be the initial volunteer, probably not, Jon would NEVER agree to that. If I had to guess Basira would probably be the first volunteer, while Georgie and Melanie work on getting the cult members somewhere safe. However, something will happen and Basira can’t do the deed, and it will ultimately be Martin.
I can’t see it being anyone else. There’s been too much foreshadowing. “I will pay any price, even dying” the parallels to both Agnes AND Emma, that goddamn line in 169 “I don’t want to get burned, all right? It’s, it’s like my least favorite pain ever” AND the season 3 ending where he’s burning the statements. It all HAS to come back to bite us in the ass and here it is
So, there we go, there’s my ending theory. Either way, Jon’s gonna wish he threw that lighter in the pit
