Beth March, The March Family Letters
“Laurie, it’s me, here’s my heart on the table/ I’m hoping you’ll see how much I am able to love and to live/ To take what I’m given and make it something new/ Starting with this song for you.”

Beth can’t die if there’s no season two
So look, I’m not going to call it impossible, but it’s incredibly highly unlikely that there will ever be a second season of March Family Letters. Like a fan would have to be struck with a sudden fortune of money and decide that they want to put some of it towards funding another season. Not impossible, but really though. :P So this is my little postmortem on the stories that I won’t get to tell about these characters. Feel free to read or ignore, but I’ll feel a better sense of finality on that show putting these out there into the universe (particularly since I unfortunately don’t have the free time to adapt the story in other ways like solely through Transmedia). Spoiler warning for a season that never happened :P
Jo March grieving & losing her purpose in life, struggling to create, going through the pain of rejecting Laurie & losing his friendship because she can’t love him the way he wants, getting the chance to journey out in the world and chase her dreams but it being nothing like what she dreamed, discovering her aromanticism, meeting the German non binary Fritz and forming a strong qp relationship with them, finding that spark of creation again, connecting her family back together, after they’ve been spread out far away from each other.
Laurie having to face his problematic friend zone ideas; Amy being challenged to put real emotion in her art in university and not fall back into her old patterns. Both of them finding out who they are as individuals in a foreign land and - to be honest - away from the force of personality that is Jo - and maturing into a relationship together.
Joan & Meg moving in together, domestic Joan of March - cooking together, adopting bunnies called Daisy & Demi, facing the challenges of cohabitation & sharing financial burdens and Just Being Adorable. Fighting in the way that you do when you’ve been in a relationship for sometime but not breaking up. Meg learning more about her sexuality, experimenting with labels.
Beth March…sorry for all your hearts…Beth was not going to be in S2 please don’t kill me. Actually I had an opening episode planned that even though it shall never happen, I feel like I should still apologize for and I’m very very sorry. I shall speak no more of it, but everyone who I pitched it to called me a terrible person ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Can we say I’ve been redeemed since in a fashion Beth lives on in A4O? And look, nothing I’m saying here really means anything, if Beth is still alive in your canon, I love that. But it was actually very important to me that Beth didn’t make it in this story because...that happens. It sucks but it does, and it’s an important part of the Little Women story & of life. And particularly with this adaptation I wanted to explore through transmedia how we grieve in the age of social media. Cause we’re still figuring it out and it’s messy and oftentimes uncomfortable.
And yes. Instead of Marmee, the letters were going to be addressed to Beth.
Anyway all this to say that we recorded Beth’s songs and they’re sounding really good and listening to them has made me nostalgic and I can’t wait to share them with you all sooooon~ Thank you for indulging me :)
Ps. If anyone’s reading this, (answer to this might be relevant for things), did you have a favourite Beth song?
