April’s phone dinged, the noise shaking her out of her stupor from going on two nights no sleep. She had been following leads with Donny to see all about who was connected with Shredder, to get the rest of them behind bars and never see the light of day again. It was all to keep New York City safe.
‘Bad day. Stood up on a date. Coming over.’
April tried to be the best older cousin, the shoulder to lean on, especially since Y/N’s mom had taken her in after her father died. Y/N saw her as a sister, she assumed.
Hearing thuds on her fire escape, she was immediately energized as she hurried to the window, trying to shoo the four giant mutant turtles out of the apartment. “You guys can’t be here right now!” April spoke in a hushed whisper. Her roommate had moved out weeks ago, so now they guys came and went as they wanted.
“Why not, angelcakes? You seeing someone else?” Mikey’s voice was fake hurt, Leo shot him a glare that made him silence himself. “No, I have company and she—“
“APRIL!” It was Y/N, clearly upset and on the verge of tears. April hadn’t heard her come in, or use the door at all. April made a quick motion for the guys to hide in her room, ushering them in and shutting the door.
Y/N came into view wearing a baggy, cut up shirt, sweats, hair threw up lazily. She looked like hell. “Oh, honey,” April opened her arms for her, Y/N launching in her arms and sobbing. Beginning to stroke her hair, April looked down at her. “Tell me all about it.”
Hiccuping, Y/N began to recant the tale of her day. The cute guy from chemistry asking her out, how he said to meet up at the pizza parlor. How he stood her up. “A-and then I got a text saying it was a fucking joke,” she sobbed into her cousin’s chest, sniffling.
The boys, of course, couldn’t stay still and kept locked away. Donnie had brought a mini spy drone to stick out of the room, Mikey being all over him to see just who was getting all of his angelcake’s attention. Raph and Leo tried to act like they weren’t curious, but all piled in on Donnie too to see. April’s door couldn’t hold the weight of more than one turtle weighing in at a whopping 250 lbs.
Now multiply that by four?
The door splintered and cracked, tearing off the hinges as all the turtles less than gracefully fell to the ground on top of each other.
April scrambled to try to hold Y/N into her chest and prevent her from seeing. Y/N thrashed until she tore away, eyes wide as saucers.
“April, you need to take me to the ER like right now.” Y/N said, head snapping back towards her cousin. The whole room fell in confusion, turtles and all. “I’m high as fuck off this edible and I’m tripping seeing four giant fucking turtles in your living room right now. I think my shit’s laced or I’m ODing or—“ Y/N hyperventilated before taking a calming breath.
“An edible?” Realizing what she had said, Y/N paled. “Please don’t tell my mom I do edibles please April,” she cried, already in a delicate mental state from her shitty day.
The turtles all stood up, looking between each other. This was … good news? They could slink away and pretend nothing happened? Score!
As Donnie and Leo crept back, Raph was glued to the floor. “Raph! C’mon!” Leo snarled, pulling on his brother who seemed to be in an entranced state. He was transfixed, looking at the girl still sobbing into April’s arms. What was that Mikey said when he first saw April? Oh, right.
“Dibs.” It left his mouth quietly, making Leo roll his eyes and yank him away.
As Y/N and April spoke more in the living room, April shooting Donnie a text saying she was taking Y/N home, he breathed a sigh of relief.
“What were you thinking?! You just froze up like some idiot! We can’t have more humans knowing about us!” Leo scolded, Raph simply watching April take the dazed Y/N to her car.
“Yeah, yeah. My bad.” He grumbled quietly, snarling as Mikey laughed. “See?! What did I tell you guys! I knew she had hot friends!”
After a few hours, due to her rapid regeneration, the edibles wore off extra quickly. April had convinced her they were probably laced, and to stay away from weed and things like that. She was an impressionable kid!
She was almost eighteen, thank you very much. And it was NYC, where was the crime in a little pot? It’s not like Batman was going to emerge from the shadows and start beating her ass. Speaking of Batman …
“Mom, why are we up here? Shouldn’t we be, I dunno, patrolling, instead of staying in one place?” Y/N asked her mother perched on a rooftop, masked and peering down at the streets.
“If you’d keep your mouth shut, we’d be able to hear if anyone needs help. You know this is a sketchy area.” Her mother was a vigilante way before New York knew it had any vigilantes. One of the OGs, if you will. Her mother had the same ability as she did, due to April’s dad injecting her with a potential mutagen variant to save her failing pregnancy.
Now, here she was, seventeen years later. Watching the bustling streets of NYC with a balaclava and ‘cat claws’. Being born with the abilities were … different than being injected with them. Y/N was faster, stronger than her mother, considering it mutated into her genes. She had an elevated heart rate, abnormal scans and scary growth at one point. They strayed away from doctors for a very long time because of it.
Her mother had also never asked if she wanted to become a vigilante, but frequently told her she simply had to put her god-given abilities to use. Yeah, if by god-given she meant her now deceased uncle in a lab surrounded by a bunch of maniacs.
“Fine, Y/V/N(vigilante name), you take the East side, I’ll take West. Call if you need me.” Y/M/N held up the watches on her wrist, making Y/N nod. “Okay, mom. I’ll see you later.” Sprinting across the rooftops, Y/N sighed contentedly. She always enjoyed being alone up here, one of the few places she felt wild and free. No pressure, no other people, just her and the bustling sounds of NYC from up high.
Well, not anymore. She caught laughing, similar laughing to what she heard when she followed April to the sewers. April … Y/N shuddered remembering the bad trip she had today. Imagining giant, mutated turtles? She should find the guy she bought those edibles from and beat his ass for lacing them.
As she crept up on the sound, her eyes widened behind the mask. Holy shit.
