A Boy a Ring and their Memories

Rated K Inspired by the Memory Meme

Memory One

Xander pocketed the ring pop ring and grinned as he tracked down his girlfriend. They’d been together for a little over two years. It was nice. No, it was more than nice. And today? Today they were at the arcade of all things. She wanted him to hold on to his life before school, before college and before everything took it away. It was corny but he liked the thought. Grinning at the thought, Xander tracked her down, dark hair and all. She was currently owning at the generic dancing game. He’d racked up the highest points on the racing game. Their collection of tickets was amazing. They had enough to get almost any prize. It was amazing. She was amazing.

“Hey!” She graced him with her bright smirk, never really a smile but a smirk.

“Hey, I got you something.” Xander shuffled about, embarrassed but happy.

“It’s not much but umm here.” He produced the ring from his pocket and handed it to Ruby, face red from a blush and stomach flip flopping all over the place. Ruby picked up the ring candy, still wrapped in plastic a look of amusement and something else (something he couldn’t place) flashed through her eyes.

“Do you honestly expect me to wear this?” Xander felt his heart sink and face fall. “I mean you didn’t even do it properly. And you just handed it to me. Come on Alex. Live a little.”

“Oh…OH RIGHT!” He quickly reclaimed the ring and opened it up before placing it on one of her fingers. Ruby scrunched her nose as she took a lick.

“Sour grape.” A statement. Had he done the right thing? What if she didn’t like it? What if….what if what if. Xander’s thoughts whirled around his mind like a tornado. “Come here.” She beckoned him closer with a finger and kissed him. It was short and rough but it was a kiss. So he must have done something right.

“Hey….Ruby….I love you.” She didn’t spare him a glance, something he would never mention to anyone, just took a long lick from the ring pop and started the game.

“I know.”

Memory Two

“So you’re really gonna do it? Not gonna chicken out this time? Cause I will tell your brother.”

“Yeah I’m gonna go through with it this time. What! NO! Drew you promised! I would never hear the end of it if you told him! I had a hard enough time telling you! Please don’t tell Ian. Please.” Xander looked up through his bangs at his best friend. God how was he supposed to even ask her if he could barely tell Drew what he was planning.

“You know she’s going to say yes.”

“Yeah? How do you know?”

“It’s your mother’s ring. How could she say no to that?”

“Easily.” Xander looked in the mirror and attempted to fix his hair. “It really wouldn’t be that difficult. Hell it would be easier for her to say no and walk away then it would for me to get off one knee….”

Drew let out an annoyed sigh and walked up behind his roommate, clearly annoyed. “We’ve been over this. And even if I wasn’t your best friend, I can still safely say she’ll say yes.” He reached around and opened the mirror producing something to tame the uncontrollable hair.

“Oh yeah? How?”

“I read people. It’s what I do. Now go. You’re gonna be late.”

“Fine fine. Just um….yeah I’m going.”

“You got the ring.” Xander patted his jacket pocket. “Good.” Drew waited until Xander left the room to add, “Even if you back out I won’t tell Ian.”

It was past 11 when the door opened again. He didn’t even have to ask. “You didn’t ask her.”

“She’s thinking of transferring.” Xander flopped down on his bed and placed a pillow over his face. How the hell could he possibly think he was ready for all this? Hell he’d dated, if you could even call it that, Ruby longer before even working up the courage to give her a fake ring. Why the hell did he think he could give her his mother’s ring? Or even ask? They hadn’t even been dating half the amount of time him and Ruby had.

“Stop that.”

“sthapwhut?”

“Xander.”

Xander removed the pillow from his face and threw it. “Ya know I can hear it in your voice when you roll your eyes.”

“What exactly did she say?”

“She was thinking of transferring because she didn’t have anywhere to live for the summer or fall semester.”

“…..Xander you’re an idiot. That was a feeler question! She wants to move in with you. You idiot!”

“Wait what?” Xander’s eyes widened as he raced out of the room.

“You’d lose your head without me.”

Memory Three

“You sure you want to move out?”

“Too many ghosts here.”

“I get that. Hell you can move in with me and Zeke for a bit if you’d like.” Zeke walked past at that moment, and placed a box on the table.

“I believe that is the last box from your room. You are welcome to stay with Ian and I tonight if you wish.”

“Na it’s cool. I’m staying with Drew. He’s already expecting me and all. Hell he’ll probably use me as shrink practice. But thanks. Really I’m fine.” He reached for a box and carried it out not wanting either of them to see how not okay he was. Tears were already starting to build up. This had been their place and now it was nothing more than a shell. Let someone else have it and build memories there. For him it was nothing more but a nightmare.

Xander jumped when he felt a hand on his shoulder. “Hey kid, you don’t have to pretend with us. We know how much she meant to you.”

“Really Ian, I’m fine.”

“Sure you are and I’m a princess.”

“Wouldn’t surprise me if you were.”

“I’m serious, it’s okay to get mad.”

“Right and let me guess you’re really a blond.”

“Dude harsh.” Xander rolled his eyes only mildly surprised when Ian pulled him into a hug. “Just don’t do anything stupid. Call me if it gets that bad. Or Zeke. Either one of us.”

“………….”

“Xant.”

“I will. Promise. No more. You got the last of it.”

“Good.” It sounded more like a growl.

“Last of what?” Zeke asked, placing the box next to the others in the trunk.

“Last of Xander’s porno stash. You outta be ashamed of yourself. I thought you had better taste!”

“IAN!” Zeke rolled his eyes at their antic and reached into his jacket pocket to produce a small box.

“I found this in your room. I did not want you to forget it.” He placed the box in Xander’s hand. Xander didn’t say anything. Everything narrowed down to that one little box. For a second his breathing stopped and his hand felt like lead. He was certain he’d thrown it away after that night. How was it here? How? He wanted to ask but no words came out, only a broken strangled noise. Before he knew what was going on, Ian had an arm wrapped around his waist, steadying him. Zeke was nearby, hand resting on his shoulder. Both were speaking to him but Xander couldn’t hear anything past the rush of blood in his ears. Then all the noise hit him at once and it sounded like everything was on maximum volume. He wanted to run, to get away but two strong grips kept him steady. Xander wasn’t even aware he was speaking or what he was saying but the looks on Ian and Zeke’s face said it all. He must have said what it was. What it was going to be.

Ian picked up the box and clicked it open, almost as if he didn’t believe but sure enough there, resting in the interior, was a simple ring. On each side of a small diamond where three sapphires, the ring itself was rose gold. The band was simple but elegant. The diamond was set in a heart and engraved into the band were the words Forever and Always.

The box was closed and honestly Xander didn’t pay much attention to what happened to it. He was too busy trying to gain some amount of control as the anxiety attack passed. It didn’t stop the tears from falling.

Assuming you mean around teenage years, I would go with Brock Kelly, but if you want to go even younger, I know Ridge Canipe played a much younger version of Dean in Supernatural.

Edit: I just saw a gif hunt of Drew Van Acker oh my dash and thought he was a pretty good choice, too!
