The JDM Mini
In 1986 the British vehicle manufacturer, British Leyland (BL) was renamed The Rover Group and continued the production of the “mini” as a marque in its own right, although the “ROVER” badge was seen on selected models. The “Rover” Minis, as they were initially called, starting around 1990, were exported in large numbers to Japan. These Minis included many additions to the models being made for the UK, Canada, and Australia. The most common example included air conditioning. Since then the Mini Culture in Japan has continued to grow, and the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) Minis are sought after world wide. Each JDM Mini is unique and takes on the personality of the owner. Many of the existing JDMs can be conservatively labeled as “Custom” and rarely present unmolested in its original configuration, which adds an extra layer of novelty. The admiration the Japanese have for the Mini was explained best by Turtle Trading, LTD Owner Jiro Shimazu, in a Telegraph interview, when he said “Us Japanese have a special sort of love for Minis, probably because we have so much in common,"(Ryall, Julian, 2012). https://www.telegraph.co.uk/…/9590…/Mini-mania-in-Japan.html
