Ya know, not to "make everything queer" or whatever
But The New Legends of Monkey kinda has a good trans allegory
Like Tripitaka spends the entirety of the first season pretending to be a boy, everyone around her thinks she's a boy, everyone uses he/him for her, and she feels terrible about keeping it a secret from everyone. She's afraid of being seen as a fraud for not being the boy everyone expects her to be, the boy everyone wants and needs her to be. When Monkey finally finds out, he's confused and a little hurt. He needs some time to process. Pigsy, on the other hand? He's just cool with it, and he tries his best to switch to she/her for Tripitaka, though he wants to know why she didn't tell anyone. Neither of them feel very much betrayed. Hell, when asked, even Monkey says, "Betrayed? No."
And, I don't know, maybe it's because I'm trans, but I see that whole thing in a brand new light compared to when I saw it the first time. It's non explicit but positive trans representation. No anger for being "tricked", no "Well, we've treated you as a boy this entire time, and it's really confusing to change that," just "Oh! Tripitaka is a girl! Makes sense, she was a pretty weird boy. Any new name? No? Coolio, let’s go kill some demons!" and I just think that's really neat.
