Would it be safe to assume that Makana is twisted from Maui?
They're both got a lot of pride and show dismissiveness towards girls who they don't think are worth their time.
Both receive praise and admiration from the islanders around them, and most glaringly of all, Maui was directly responsible for Te Fiti turning into Te Ka. Kinda like Makana's taunts cementing Mahina's decision to close herself off from others to pour everything she has into cultivating an image of strength.
Also Makana's name is Hawaiian for "gift", which reminds me of all the gifts of the sun, rain, and coconuts Maui boasts of giving humanity in his song.
You hit the nail right on the head, though whereas Maui has been able to grow as a person due to Moana, Makana hasn’t changed because Motunui hasn’t seen change.
Traditions are deeply rooted into Motunui, both the good and the bad, meaning things like “Gender Norms” are still a pretty black and white concept. Girls do the homemaking, Boys do the working, Girls make baskets for fishermen, and Boys become fishermen. Things like this, and many more are still very common in Motunui.
People who don’t fit into societal norms are usually ignored, shunned, or not taken seriously…hence how Mahina got issues with Gender and what it means to be a strong woman.
Makana isn’t actively any more malicious than any other Motunui boy who grew up under traditional values, he’s just a lot more vocal about it and just happened to be pretty influential and well liked with the local community (being such a good surfer/Spelldrive player).
