"Why the bell? It was not a good look on you."

"..."

"... what?"

"Can I just. Have a moment here?"

"What? Also are you laughing at me? That bell was terrifying. I obviously have to ask why you had to have a bell. It looked stupid on you, not a great fashion choice."

"Kid, bud, Xiaotian, I—I need a very long moment, because that is just stupidly ridiculous and out of nowhere and the bell was something she put on me, oh my gods, Buddha's sake–"

"Stop laughing! It was a perfectly reasonable question!"

"I—I can't breathe–"

"Hey! And you don't even need air to breathe, you're immortal!"

Fear.

It's more like a poison than anything else with the way it grips the heart and the sinking feeling that rises in one's gut. The way it digs it's claws in and rips at another emotion. Despair. Was that the right word for what he was feeling. As the staff shakes in his trembling grasp, as he can feel the coldness of the stone wall, the faint rugged pattern as his back is pressed against it. A similar scene mimicked by the fiery red demon on the opposite side of him. The pillars in front hiding them from side view as the tunnel makes no noise besides the occasional noise of the wind slowly passing through.

They had gotten away. He can still feel the lingering gaze. The way his body won't stop shaking. How instincts, baseline in nature, still scream at him as he doesn't move a muscle. Straining to listen for anything that might suggest otherwise. His lips part just as eyes meet his own, an unspoken question lingers but the answer is given.

A faint chime.

Barely hearable if it wasn't for how quiet it was. It's a ghastly sound with the way it echoes followed by a sense of dread. As the wall behind the red head explodes as a scream dies in Xiaotian's throat. Because thankfully while the Bull Prince was able to throw himself out the way fast enough. Those chilling lifeless pale eyes that stare at him. Chill him to the bone more than the unnatural cold.

There's no sound when sneaking through a city where the shadow beasts hunt and the crystals loom. It's normal.

Qi Xiaotian quietly breathes, feels his fingers clutch tightly to the staff as he inches forward. Motions Red Son to carefully follow behind him. There's nothing around them or close to them, judging by the way pieces of jagged concrete are scattered around and nothing has pushed them out of the way.

Nothing.

Nothing is making a sound.

Nothing is there.

And that would usually make Qi Xiaotian relieved. But he's not.

Panic is clawing at his chest, short spikes and bursts of it flitting through, desperate and waiting. His heart pounds silently, loudly in his ears. He can't quite take a deep breath. Something is wrong and he can't tell what it is.

"Disaster boy," Red Son hisses in his ear, and clawed hands grab at his arm. Qi Xiaotian turns his head to stare at him. The demon is scowling at him. "What's wrong?"

"I don't know," Qi Xiaotian urgently whispers back, feeling his hands tightening around the staff. "I don't even know what's even wrong right now–"

Ting.

They both freeze. It's a familiar sound.

Ting.

Ting.

It's coming closer.

Closer.

Closer.

"A bell," Qi Xiaotian says numbly, and horror suddenly dawns on Red Son's face, his grip nearly slackening. They know. They know who's coming. And that is when they run.

"We are the tools crafted by our Master," Savage says, looking down at his hand and curling his fingers into a fist, "the weapons he will wield in order to serve the Lady. It is our duty to serve."

The blue demon regards him curiously. "But do you want to serve her?"

"..." He has no answer to that. But the silence is loud enough to speak his mind.

"Yeah, that's what I thought." A clawed hand brushes against his arm, warmth trailing after its touch. "You should make your own choices, for what you want to do."

"... how can I, when all I have ever known is to obey?"

A thoughtful pause. "Well. You take it one step at a time, right? That's at least what the humans do, and what little Lily says."

The little mortal who has somehow managed to drag them all together through sheer boldness and bright smiles. Her words, no matter how strange they sound, make some sense. He's not sure how, but they do. His heart beats once, twice. Three times. How strange. "Perhaps," Savage says, slow and steady, "we shall see if she is correct on this matter."

"A losing bet if you ask me." A wild laugh escapes, and the blue one grins with a savage look befitting of a demon. "Little Lily's always right about these kinds of things."
