TOBAN Tueday
Good afternoon listeners! It's 15:00 and time for your TOBAN Tuesday update from your friendly local firebird liveblogging from the shed.
Despite the fact the mercury has settled at a lower then expected 22*C, as has the humidity and wind, the cicadas are not letting up. In fact, as I write, the shed has been invaded by swathes of green, black and gold insects hosting their own version of what must surely be Wacken Open Air. The truck is covered in cicadas. The walls are covered in cicadas. I am covered in cicadas.
If I could hear over the din I'd pass on the fire updates, but since I'm deafened I'm merely going off the RFS Current Incidents map to tell me that there are still no fires within the area.
I expect to know by 16:00 whether the TOBAN will be continued tomorrow, but until then remember that today's TOBAN lasts until midnight tonight. Keep an eye out for smoke and wave at your brigades as they patrol!
Got some time to kill after lunch? Update your Bushfire Survival Plan! If you don't progress past planning to make a plan, you might end up like me and covered in screaming insects.
Except it won't be insects. It will be fire. And they won't be screaming. You will.
On that note, this has been your 15:00 TOBAN Tuesday update from your local firebird!
TOBAN Tuesday
It's 13:00 and you know what that means listeners! This is your lunch time update of TOBAN Tuesday with your local firebird, liveblogging from the shed!
First up, there is no fire activity in the Sydney basin as of 13:00. Secondly, if the insectoid rioting in the trees is anything to go by, the temperature has spiked and the humidity is taking a dive driven by hot winds due WNW. As the day goes on and we move into the hotter temperatures please be mindful of TOBANs in your local area, keep an eye out for smoke and call any sightings in to your local station. Or, if you don't have access to a phone or computer connected to the internet, wait patiently by, but not in, your smoke sighting for the trucks to arrive. We're living smoke alarms you know.
TOBANs mean you can use electric and gas BBQ's under direct and constant supervision, so your snag lunch is safe. No solid fuel BBQ's or fires of any kind are allowed and any burn permits are automatically suspended. Fines of up to $5500 and/or 12mnths gaol and/or re-education apply for so much as striking a match on a lawn, and you don't want to know what happens if that match so much as withers someone's Gardenia.
As always, keep an ear on the radio, an eye on the RFS site and update your Bushfire Survival Plan. Planning to make a plan is a plan to loose your spaghetti!
Leaving you to enjoy your fire-free lunch is your local firebird.
