The duality of Ghost songs
So Zombie Queen/Ghuleh is about a literal beautiful zombie queen.
Tobias Forge: Well yes, but it’s really about nostalgia and how we tend to idealize the past and make it something more beautiful and delicate than it is, which hides the rot and decay underneath.
Okay got it! So Umbra is about how the Christian church is a shadowy organization hiding its ulterior and nefarious motives!

I’ve noticed that in the Ghost fandom, the following opinion is often expressed: “After all, we are here for fun. Let’s just be positive and enjoy the music we like together. Is it really that hard to do that in a fandom of a band that puts fart jokes in their videos?” As I thought about this, I formulated a counter‑statement for myself: Yes, it is hard, because Ghost is a Trojan horse.
The thing is that Ghost isn’t just fun music with jokes and stupid memes. One way or another, Tobias constantly brings up painful topics. He talks about mortality and the acceptance of death. He kills characters who have become iconic and beloved. He manipulates fans’ emotions. Sometimes, whether intentionally or not, he presses on such painful triggers related to personal losses that people can no longer “just be positive.”
On the other hand, all of this is wrapped in a shell of silly genre and absurd plot. By subtly pressing on sensitive points, the band (or the fandom) at the same time seems to keep you avay from talking about it seriously. “Come on, man, it’s just a Scooby‑Doo-rock, how can you be so angry / upset / spreading negativity around because of this?”
I think this duality is both the band’s strength and its curse. There are plenty of hooks in this music and lore, but the fisherman is always hidden. That’s why it hits us so hard. That’s why we experience it so deeply. That’s why we’re shamed when we talk about our painful reactions.
Have you noticed something like that in yourself? Was there a moment when it seemed to you that Ghost was becoming something more complex and painful for you than just a silly joke?
