All right then. I'm sorry we can't have the party.
The thing about Toby, the thing that I always forget that despite being a self-loathing, bitter, arrogant, Jewish archetype whose awfully liberal, he's actually incredibly charming. I'm re-watching the series for the 3rd time and I'm at one of my favourite eps - The US Poet Laureate - where he's interested in Tabitha Fortis. Their first interaction, the conversation goes like this:
"TABITHA: Am I, uh, really weird right off the bat?
TOBY: Do you want to be?
TABITHA: No.
TOBY: Then you're not."
He's sweet, he's so charming. When they walk pass Sam, he shifts away from him. I think that's because Sam's so traditionally good looking, he can carry himself with positivity and eagerness that comes through as confidence in comparison to Toby - who is quite shy, who does feel inferior a lot. He can be quiet, quite backgrounded despite being so fiery at heart. As she questions his fondness of poetry (claiming they love it, as a way to impress her) he immediately responds saying his favourite is her. And it's not done as just some trick "to get her into bed", it's done because...he wants to impress her.
There's a lot of the interaction later between Toby and Andi where he's trying to marry her and he carries on trying to be smooth. Andi, having married/lived with him, can see through it. I don't think Toby puts on an act, I think Toby is actually more honest with these women. He's quite a good Father, and an awfully good friend to CJ ffs and more damn it by being sweet. But he actually struggles so much expressing that side that he can't quite get to grasps with it - then he meets some woman and it releases itself. And I loved that Tabitha brings that out and he's so gracious, going to see her in Georgetown to help her.
I dunno, I think he's actually a sweetie, charming and his own compassion is sometimes his downfall.
