Why is Jim Such a Bitch in TobyVision

I’ll start by saying that Jim does not hate Toby in this AU. At all. In fact it’s quite the opposite.

I always found Barbara’s parenting ridiculous because Jim was being more of a parent to her than the other way around. Jim feels this need to protect her and do things for her out of fear that if she were to do these things herself she wouldn’t need him anymore and would leave him. ABANDONMENT ISSUES!!

It’s the same thing with Toby. When Jim meets Toby, the latter is in the midst of his “omg guys we’re gonna dieeeee a fire is gonna happen I had a dream where Mary broke her tibia ITS AWFUL” and you know, everyone thought he was a spaz. Jim isn’t judgmental or anything and he never called Toby out to say “oh you’re being ridiculous.” However, Jim had this idea of Toby in his head where he was just… weaker. Emotionally weak for sure. Physically weak? Likely. And because of this Jim feels the need to be protective and do things for Toby as well.

“Oh Tobes don’t worry I’ll make your lunch.”

“Tobes don’t go to the store alone let me go with you.”

“Tobes let me cut the paper you could get hurt”

IM NOT EXAGGERATING!!

Toby did find Jim to be a bit overbearing but he didn’t say anything about it because 1) he had his own shit to deal with because of the wiggle shapes and the Trilafon and 2) he knows deep down that Jim’s parental relations had an impact on him even if Jim’s too stubborn to admit it, and Toby wouldn’t want to hurt Jim’s feelings.

Now when Toby stated talking about seeing the future when it comes to trollhunting, like Strickler being a changeling or Angor Rot attacking them or whatever, Jim’s mind is just like “oh great this shit again I thought he stopped doing this when we were 12.” He already views Toby as inferior, even if not in a bad way. He doesn’t want to feed Toby’s delusions for fear of Toby doing something stupid and putting himself in danger. He figures that Toby would drop it eventually.

Jim also has this tendency, as we know, to put all burdens on himself. Jim would rather pursue his trollhunting duties alone than take Toby’s advice because Jim believes he’s competent enough to do it on his own.

Deep down, most of all, (this is specifically after Jim actually starts believing Toby can see the future) Jim is worried that because Toby has this ability, Toby will now be able to function and protect himself independently. Even be a helpful asset for the team. And Jim is scared that if Toby can do all this without him, then he will eventually decide he doesn’t need Jim at all and will leave him too.

LOSER!!

Their relationship bends and crumbles throughout this AU, and Jim only gets worse until he eventually fixes things by the end of SEASON 3. Oh he’s an ASS in season 3 SPECIFICALLY. It’s so bad. Can’t wait to yap about it 🤪

Ok so I will be explaining TobyVision !! Those who care can read it those who don’t just go about your day I guess

A little birdie told me it might be easier to understand if I make multiple posts so that’s what I’m gonna do

TobyVision the Series!!

TobyLore Episode 1 : You See the Vision?

So all the posts after this will be going by season so season 1, 2, 3, then 3Below then Wizards and finally the bumass movie

Now I figured it would be extremely confusing though to keep tabs on everything Toby actually has a vision of if you’re having to keep in mind multiple posts. So this is gonna be a master list of all the stuff Toby forsees and then the other posts will basically explain how the majority of them get retconned so the plot can still unfold sort of normal.

I won’t be including 3Below in this list because I need to rewatch it to remember what the fuck even happens

Wizards isn’t here either because I’m actually changing that plot

Anyway in chronological order, here are the MAJOR events that Toby has visions of in this timeline’s Trollhunters and the movie:

- The amulet in the first place, which shows up in a weird fever dream prior to the first episode

- Strickler being a changeling

- The fight with Angor Rot at the Quaga Swamp place

- Claire being a shadow demon and trying to kill them (these predictions Toby has aren’t always interpreted by him accurately)

- AARRRGHH dying and Jim going to the darklands

- Jim being locked away in Gunmar’s lair in the Darklands

- Gets fucking flashbanged by Morgana and all the shit that’s gonna happen with her (this one requires A LOT of explaining)

- Draal getting possessed by the Decimar blade (and therefore Gunmar being free)

- Vendel dying, but he doesn’t see it was Usurna who did it

- Gets another vision of Claire being an evil shadow witch trying to kill them, but this time Morgana is there too

- Several visions that don’t actually show him anything but a black void and a bunch of sounds that all layer onto each other to where he can’t even recognize any of it and it just wears him tf out

- The parents intervening

- Gets a strange feeling about Aja and Krel but doesn’t share anything about it

- Jim turning himself into a troll

- The final battle but in a lack of detail, just certain parts of it replaying in his mind

- Angor Rot dying

- General Morando invading Earth

And now for the movie 🤕 where the only two things he predicts are:

- Steve’s ugly cyan babies, he tries to poison the guy but then decides against it, praying he just interpreted the vision wrong again

- That they can defeat Belroc with the null ray

TobyLore Episode 1 & 1/2: Envisioning

This is Pre-Trollhunters but in the TobyVision timeline

If you missed the first episode of my lore drop, go here

So a little background, Toby has had visions since he was born. They were never clear "seeing into the future" sort of things, moreso just gut feelings that were always right. He was one of those kids who'd run around at recess screaming about how there'd be a forest fire or something and then start flailing on the ground.

He'd also be one of those kids who had a lot of night terrors, and when he woke up he wouldn't be able to describe a single detail of what he saw but he would be like "oh it was so bad Jimbo you fell down the stairs I didn't see it but I remember the sound" and then the boy falls down the stairs the next day.

At some point (maybe at age 13 or 14?) Toby starts this jibber jabber about stone creatures living underground and a magic bridge AND there are monsters walking amongst them pretending to be human (but he only ever spoke about this with his family, as he didn't want Jim to think he was a lunatic. "He isn't ready to know the truth.")

Speaking of Jim, he always saw Toby as uh... hyperactive? Sure his behavior was a bit dramatic but he had gotten too used to it by now to judge him. Though it does spark some sort of savior complex in him which we will talk about MUCH later.

Nana would ask "who told you all this junk about monsters Toby-Pie" and Toby would be like "I just know Nana! I saw it in my mind! I feel it in my bones!!" And at this point Toby's a bit too old to be believing in monsters.

Nana takes Toby to a psychiatrist after he insists that his dentist is one of these stone demons.

The psychiatrist has no idea what the fuck to do about that so he prescribes Toby to take Trilafon indefinitely and calls it a day. Nana ain't happy. Toby ain't happy. Nobody happy.

All that does is push Toby's "episodes" to only happen at night in the form of dreams (or fever dreams at that, with weird abstract shapes wiggling around and telling him things.) Because Toby already feels like a loser now he doesn't tell anyone about his dreams anymore, even as he begins to make small connections between the dreams and real life events.

It doesn't actually become apparent to Toby that he's seeing the future in a way until one faithful day where Kangiar falls off the fucking bridge and Jim gets chosen by the amulet.

TobyLore Episode 2: Vision Board

Season 1 of Trollhunters but in the TobyVision timeline

This season probably remains the most similar to the original out of all the parts of the TobyVision AU, and this is because everyone else's character arc is relatively the same and I didn't want to ruin the already perfectly fine groundwork put in place. Despite this, these posts are going to be very long, so I'll split them into two so you guys don't comment "I aint reading allat"

That being said Toby spends this season in fight or flight mode when it comes to these visions.

So as I explained in this ask, Toby's dreams are literally in the form of shapes and colors 90% of the time. He only has two dreams that 1) are clear and vivid and 2) come true in the first half of season 1, prior to Bular's death.

The first of is of Jim finding the amulet itself. Not much to it. Toby is confused, certainly, but he's more so celebrating the fact that he didn't dream in geometry format for the first time in like 1 & 1/2 years.

Then Toby sees Jim find the damn amulet in the canals, and all of a sudden, Toby becomes hyperaware of 6 eyes staring at them through a sewer gate. He walks over there to investigate but doesn't see anything before the school bell rings (which FOR SOME FUCKING REASON THEY CAN HEAR THAT ALL THE WAY FROM THE BRIDGE OUTSIDE OF TOWN LIKE AT THAT POINT JUST TAKE THE DAMN BUS) so they leave and Toby doesn't really think about it.

That night Toby dreams in shapes again (poor pooker) but there are two new shapes in the void. Usually it's just an orange circle and a blue rectangle, but in this dream there is also a teal, fatter and shorter rectangle as well as a big green semicircle.

Toby wakes up miserable because he's back with the wiggle shapes. He goes to the dentist. And you may be thinking "why is he still going to the same dentist when in your episode 2 post you said he accused the guy of being a stone demon" well let's just say the dentist cares more about money than a seemingly schizophrenic kid.

Just like in the original show, Toby goes to Jim's house and Jim shows him the armor. And everything's fine until Blinky and AARRRGHH show up, and Toby loses his marble because WTF ITS THE STONE MONSTERS FROM MY OLD PARANOIA and he, like, panics, but then is like "wait chat is this real?" and kind of just sits there and observes them a little. And by the end of the encounter he's not as much scared over the fact that trolls exist, moreso that he KNEW they existed somehow

Now that he has a suspicion that his dreams aren't just dreams, he begins 2 courses of action.

he becomes increasingly adamant about the whole "trolls in disguise as humans" thing around Jim, who insists that Toby is letting trollhunting get into his head, and that he should sit out for a couple nights to catch up on sleep.

Toby becomes determined to have another vision-dream

But for literally the rest of this portion of the season, from episodes 3-13, Toby only dreams in wiggly shapes, much to his disdain. EXCEPT for at some point after the episode with Nomura, where he has another hyper-realistic dream, this time with Strickler's troll form, and the only way he'd even be able to think it could be Strickler is because "GoOd LoOk FoR pIcTuRe DaY" in a tacky accent was literally echoing in his mind throughout the whole dream sequence.

Toby tries to warn Jim but Jim is a stubborn punkass in this AU and refuses to listen to Toby AGAIN (this will become a pattern, and it becomes a major complication within their friendship moving forward). And of course when Toby's right, Jim is too caught up in what he has to do next as the trollhunter rather than considering "hey how come Toby's always right?"

TobyLore Episode 3: Visionary

Season 2 of Trollhunters but in the TobyVision Timeline

Toby is not doing great following the events of the Season 1 finale. In fact he's doing AWFUL. After Jim went through the portal into the Darklands, Toby ran off. It's the end of spring break now, and Claire has been trying to get in contact with Toby to no avail. Darci as well, but at least she sort of heard back. Not really though, just a thumbs up emoji to Darci's many "are you ok" texts.

Toby feels like he failed both Jim and AARRRGHH. What's the point of his powers if he can't even use them properly?

Nana finally notices Toby is out of Trilafon and assumes that's why Toby is in this odd depressive state. She orders him a stronger dose.

So how does Toby get his pep back in his step?

VISION!!

The day before the first day back to school, aka the day before Toby gets his new Trilafon supply, Toby has a vision of Jim in the Darklands. This is unlike the other visions he's had before because he's seeing exactly what's happening to Jim right at that moment! Seeing Jim talking to chalk drawings in a cave is so tragically pathetic that it motivates Toby to do something to save him. His best friend isn't dead YET. But he WILL surely die if Toby doesn't get his ass up and get him back. And that's what he's GOING TO DO !! :D

He's rather chipper the next day! Nana thinks the Trilafon is working already. In actuality, Toby ain't taking that shit ever again. Meanwhile, Claire is mad at Toby for not responding to her. Toby tells her that he was going through a bit of a spiral but he's over it now and ready to get Jim back. This worries Claire a bit but she brushes it off in favor of Toby's can-do attitude.

Darci is even more worried for Toby, but she tries not to show it because she doesn't want him to think she's codependent or anything (spoiler alert: she is, but they both are so it's fine) because they literally only just got together.

Things go pretty much how it does in the show up until Toby getting his headgear of doom. It's a torture mechanism for sure, right? His dentist seemed WAY too excited about giving it him. It's pretty much exactly how the episode is for a bit, including Darci catches Claire up close and personal with Toby's headgear (which I always found stupid). Darci feels incredibly hurt due to 1) it's her best friend and 2) she's really attached to tis guy, yes?

While Toby and Claire are investigating the Janus Order HQ place, Darci calls Claire demanding answers. Claire isn't sure what to say exactly and just starts yapping

"Toby said he was hearing, like, voices or something and he thought it was coming from his headgear so I was trying to listen to see if he was telling the truth crazy right...?"

"Really, Claire? What is he, schizophrenic?"

"Possibly- TOBY DON'T TOUCH THAT! I gotta go bye!"

And then Darci is just even more confused.

Again everything is pretty much the same up until Otto captures them. Claire, Blinky, and NotEnrique wake up in that dingy ass grey room, and Claire notices Toby is not with them.

Meanwhile, Toby is in a SEPERATE grey room, tied up. Right next to him is that stupid creepy music box. It gives Toby a bad vibe. Otto enters the room with some dentist tools and a very sinister expression. He removes Toby's headgear just as he did in the show. Toby then askes where everyone else is and if Otto did something to them. Otto's like, "Sure I COULD tell you. OR, you could see for yourself" and starts playing the music box. And after a bit of listening to the ear splitting screeching from the instrument Toby gets snapped into a psychic episode. It's painful so he screams (music to MY ears personally). Claire and the others hear Toby and start to really worry.

Toby can't really hear Otto but he chooses to explain anyway. Otto is a polymorph, right, meaning he is a changeling with multiple forms. One of these forms happens to be Toby's dentist. (I've always wondered why the dentist appears in the season 1 credits. This is why, because he's OTTO.) This is why Toby accuses his dentist of being an "evil troll demon" and also why Otto remains Toby's dentist even after that. Otto is ALSO Toby's psychiatrist, giving him a placebo Trilafon that is meant to monitor Toby's visions. Otto is obsessed with Morgana, yes? Visions aren't inherently dark magic, but Toby's, considering he only ever sees bad, are. Otto hopes to use Toby's abilities to communicate with Morgana in a way. He, as the dentist, gave Toby the headgear to lure him to the Janus Order. NOW, he can see it all. Sorta.

And Toby basically gets sensory overload because now every single thing that's going to happen with Morgana in the future is rushing to his brain all at once. The real Toby is mumbling some bullshit in Latin, which Otto writes down to translate later (don't ask me what it is I don't know just know it's ominous doom and despair stuff).

Eventually, Toby passes out. Otto turns off the music and leaves the room without another word to Toby. He goes to where Claire, Blinky, and NotEnrique are, who yell at Otto to tell them where Toby is. Otto reassures them that he was just removing Toby's headgear and that he's fine. He gives them the recipe to bring AARRRGHH back to life and sends them on their way. Claire makes a run for it to find Toby, but he isn't in any of the rooms.

The Toby in question had woken up and ran out of the place as soon as possible. He texts Claire that he had to get away and that he's sorry, and she just responds with "we'll talk about this tomorrow, glad you're alive"

Toby makes a beeline upstairs once he's home without saying hi to his Nana, which concerns her. He gets jumpscared by the large amount of blood that had spilt from his eyes, and wobbles to the bathroom to clean it up. Unfortunately, just touching the area near his eye sockets makes him so woozy that he barely makes it back into his room before fainting.

The thump from upstairs entices Nana to go check on Toby, but then she hears a knock on the door. Who's there? Darci. Darci wanted to hear Toby's side of what happened earlier that day with Claire. Seeing Nana's concern, Darci assures her that she will go investigate. When she gets upstairs, she finds Toby out cold on the ground with blood streaming down his face. Darci isn't squeamish with blood, so she doesn't scream. However, she instantly rushes to Toby and starts shaking him violently to wake him up. Toby can only muster enough strength to beg Darci not to tell his Nana, afraid what she would think or do. Then he's out again.

Darci is hesitant. Does she a) do the mature thing and get an adult, or b) listen to her boyfriend(?) and not do anything. She lifts Toby into his bed and goes to the bathroom to get a towel to clean the blood off his face. Darci's that friend who if you told her not to tell your parents something, she literally NEVER would. While in the bathroom, she catches a glimpse of Toby's Trilafon bottle. And after collecting more evidence she comes to the conclusion that Toby is in extreme mental turmoil. She cleans Toby's eyes and stays with him for the rest of the night. How sweet.

It's unspoken that Darci and Toby are in a relationship now. They depend and trust each other a bit too much, but it's healthy for them! They don't need to discuss how they feel about each other because they just know. Toby vents to Darci about his visions openly, and Darci just thinks Toby's talking about his hallucinations so she gives him all the comfort and none of the follow up questions. She'll learn the truth eventually.

Toby's "Disney Channel Best Friend" Hair

What's better than Alt Toby + TobyVision?

Alt Toby + TobyVision multiplied by Lack of Sanity = New Hair Dye Every Season!

Basically Toby's hair is a different color every season or so, and it'll be like a running gag (and occasionally an insight to his character)

In season 1, Toby has, like, dark hair with his ginger roots showing. He keeps saying he's going to dye in back but they never get time with all the trollhunting responsibilities.

In season 2, Toby's dye has really grown out to the point where its just the bottom part of his hair that's dark (like in the drawing I made recently). He's too miserable from the finale of season 1 to even take care of himself let alone dye his hair back.

However, after Jim comes back from the darklands and AARRRGHH comes back to life (basically the midpoint of season 2) Toby wants to dye his hair again. Jim's all like "Tobes I could do it for you! It'll be just like old times :D" because fun fact segue, Jim pierced Toby's ears with a fork when they were 14, and Jim seems to think that's the same amount of difficulty as dying hair. Jim just wants to go back to the times where he was Toby's helicopter friend. Meanwhile, Toby is like "actually Claire said she'd do it for me instead." Jim is very upset about it. He keeps it to himself. Anyway Toby ends up with blue streaks in his hair ("I got some blue going on") courtesy of Claire.

In season 3, Toby bleaches his hair. Yeah. It was a choice. It's also bleached for the first season of 3Below.

For season 2 of 3Below and for Wizards, Toby has black hair. Like, full black hair. Not dark with ginger roots like season 1 of trollhunters, FULL BLACK.

And for the movie Toby's hair is in its natural state: ginger.

Toby's Chronic Pain

Bleeding from the eyes every other day hurts like HELL

By season 2 of 3Below, Toby has extremely sensitive eyes. He needs to wear blue light glasses for when he uses devices, blinks a lot more often than most people, and gets eyestrain very easily.

He can't be near bright colors or lights, which means no movie theaters, no glow in the dark arcades or mini golf places, no laser tag, etc. It's why he hires Eli to do the editing for the DJ Kleb movie. Toby would love to do it himself but he can't stare at the screen or flash effects for too long.

It makes Darci a bit sad that a lot of their favorite date spots are no longer accessible to go to, but she'd rather die than make Toby feel guilty about it. They watch movies at home with zero surround sound and low brightness on an iPad and Toby wears his blue light glasses and they have a jolly time because Darci is a FIEND for Toby in glasses.

Eventually, Krel makes a visor for Toby to wear with his armor helmet that can block out bright colors and lights, that way Toby doesn't have to constantly look the other way when fighting. It's very helpful for the fight against Morando, who was basically a giant glowstick.

He also has that constant feeling that he slept on his neck wrong, and if he turns his head around too fast it is a SHARP PAIN!!
