January 2016, Day 14, Kotoshogiku v Tochiozan.
Kotoshogiku, ladies and gentlemen. Massive slap with his left hand to Tochiozan’s face at the tachiai. Fast, powerful step-hops to the edge, staying low, moving forward, feet keeping up with his upper body. A final mighty shove to seal the deal. He sits alone atop the leader board with a record of 13-1. One more win tomorrow against the floundering Goeido and all his dreams come true.
Yes he did it, but it’s payback for last time Tochiozan did it to him. He has to teach them a lesson!
January 2016, Day 5, Tochiozan v Aminishiki.
One step forward, two steps back. Multiplied by two or three, and all of a sudden you’re four rows deep in the crowd. Ami-chan, finish what you start, and don’t try and pull down Tochiozan when he’s got his feet under him.
November 2015, Day 15. Tochiozan v Goeido.
Goeido underperformed this tournament, waiting until the very last day to secure his eighth win and avoid the shame of kadoban (Ozeki probation) next tournament. He showed a few flashes of brilliance, but needs to be more consistent against the top of the division. Today against Tochiozan he starts with another harite (face slap at the tachi-ai), more for distraction than anything else, and when Tochiozan gets in close with a deep left-hand underhand grip, Goeido rotates into a tight headlock with his right arm, using it to throw Tochiozan down for the kubinage (headlock throw) win.
November 2015, Day 10. Tochiozan v Hakuho.
Yokozuna Hakuho performing very unyokozuna-like sumo today. The Yokozuna has a lot of responsibility as a representative of not only the upper echelon of skilled wrestlers, but also of the entire sport and all its tradition and ritual. He should embody all that is best about the sport. So it's just bad form for him to pull the old matador move against Tochiozan, clapping in front of his face to distract him as he steps to the side. Tochiozan makes it all the way to the edge of the ring before he figures out what's happened, and barely turns around in time to meet the oncoming Yokozuna, who wraps him up and easily walks him out. The Yokozuna owes it to every other wrestler to give him his best effort, and avoid the cheap tricks. Boooooo. Hakuho is now 10-0.
