May 23, 2020 - Von der Decken's Hornbill (Tockus deckeni)
Found in eastern Africa, in parts of Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya, and Tanzania, these hornbills inhabit dry forests, savannas, and shrublands. They eat small vertebrates, eggs, fruit, seeds, and insects, usually foraging on the ground, often in pairs or small flocks. Pairs use mud and other materials to seal the entrances of their tree cavity nests with the females inside. They leave a small slit so males can pass food into the nest until the females break out of the cavities about two weeks before the chicks fledge.
