Fluid Under Toenail: What It Really Means and Why It Happens
Seeing fluid, discoloration, or an unusual buildup under your toenail can be concerning. While it may look serious, this condition is usually a sign that something has affected the nail bed beneath the nail plate.
The “fluid” you notice is not always the same in every case. It can be:
Blood, often caused by trauma or sudden impact to the toe
Clear fluid, which may develop due to irritation, pressure, or friction
Pus, which is usually linked to bacterial or fungal infection
What causes it?
The most common reasons include:
Dropping something heavy on the toe
Wearing tight or poorly fitted shoes
Repeated pressure from walking, running, or sports activities
Nail infections that slowly develop over time
Symptoms you may notice:
Along with fluid, you might experience:
Nail discoloration (black, purple, yellow, or green tones)
Mild to severe pain or throbbing
Pressure or tight feeling under the nail
In some cases, nail lifting or thickening
While minor cases may heal as the nail grows out, persistent pain, spreading discoloration, or signs of infection should not be ignored. Early attention helps prevent long-term nail damage or complications.
