Ice Cream Floats

“Mommy, can we get those red thingys I like?” Zan asked, Shauna smiled as she undid the straps of his car seat. He immediately jumped out of the car.

“Those are called plums, baby. Yes, we can get some.” Shauna grabbed Zan’s hand as they walked into the grocery store.

“Do you think Daddy gonna want anything?” Shauna couldn’t hold back the smile that was forming on her face.  It’s been about a few months since Collin and Shauna got engaged and ever since they told him, Zan’s been going around telling anyone who would listen that Collin was going to be his new Daddy.

“He did say he wanted some ice cream for dessert tonight.” Shauna huffed as she lifted Zan into the shopping cart. She had to use a little bit more effort than usual, Zan seems to be going through a growth spurt.

“You know what else sounds good to Mommy?”

“What?”

“We can make ice cream floats.”

“What’s that?”

“You pour soda into a cup and then put a scoop of ice cream on top. Mommy used to even add some cherries and whipped cream.”

“Mommy, I think you’re making this up. I never seen-ed you maked that before.” Zan frowned

“Well the last time Mommy had an ice cream float you were in Mommy’s tummy…” Shauna trailed off as the realization hit her.

She hasn’t had that craving since she was pregnant with Zan. God, she used to have these things at least once a day and it to be Cherry Coke and Breyer’s ice cream with Redi-Whip, whipped cream and maraschino cherries.

“Fuck,” Shauna whispered. Zan gasped dramatically.

“Mommy you said a bad word.”

“I know baby, Mommy’s gonna add another thing to our shopping list.”

 “Daddy, we’re back!” Zan ran through the door as soon as Shauna opened it.

Collin was sitting on the sofa lazily scrolling when Zan pounced on him.

“Woah—” Collin grunted, catching him just in time. “Hey, little man.”

“We got the plums and ice cream and Mommy said a bad word.”

Shauna froze mid step.

“Zan—”

Collin’s eyebrow lifted, a smirk slowly spreading

“She did? And Mommy says I say too many bad words.”

“Mommy is still right, Zan go change out of your clothes.”

“Can I play with Caine? He said I can play with him after school.”

“Change first and then outside.”

“But—”

“Now.” Zan huffed but still slid out of Collin’s lap. His little feet thumping down the hallway.

Collin looked back at Shauna was set the grocery bags down on the counter, harder than necessary.

“Uh…you good?”

“Yeah I’m fine.”

“Mhmm.”

“What you want for dinner?” Shauna asked, quickly unpacking-plums, ice cream, soda. Collin walked into the kitchen leaning against the wall

“Soo, you gonna tell me what this all about?”

Shauna let out a breath through her nose.

“It’s nothing. You gonna tell me what you for dinner? I was thinking burgers.”

“You tell me what’s going on first.” Collin watched her. Waiting.

Shauna turned around

“I used to crave ice cream floats when I was pregnant with Zan.”

Collin blinked once.

“Okay,”

“Like, bad. Everyday. Cherry Coke, Breyer’s ice cream, whipped cream. It was a whole thing. It had to be Coke, not Pepsi I can taste the difference.”

“Pepsi is better.”

“Collin, don’t piss me off. Anyway, I haven’t wanted one since.”

Silence fell between them. Then it clicked.

“And today you wanted one.”

“Yeah.”

Collin pushed off the wall and wrapped his arms around Shauna.

“Did you buy a test?” She nodded her head

“We’ll take it after dinner. Okay?”

“M’kay.” Collin kissed her cheek

“Pepsi is still better than Coke.”

“Collin, say that again and you gonna cook your own dinner tonight.”
