Appling County, GA On March 18th, a Facebook plea for help on behalf of a disabled private citizen goes out: Puppies abandoned, need help! The photo provided shows the animal services officer for the City of Baxley, holding three puppies in her arms. Although the ACO picked up the mother dog and one of the pups from same street, she refused services to the remaining littermates, claiming "no room at the shelter." Three puppies, now abandoned by the ACO, were left on the property of an elderly couple who could not afford to feed them. The ACO had the mother euthanized within 24 hours of pick up because she "smelled like death", leaving one puppy in a large kennel at the shelter - all alone. Guardians of Rescue answered that Facebook plea for help and provided food for abandoned puppies. We secured a foster and moved them to safety. Then, a Guardians team member adopted the puppy from the shelter and reunited her with the litter. She was informed of the "New Shelter Policy" that requires a Rabies vaccine and submitted proof within 8 days of adoption- even for puppies less than 8 weeks of age. The adoption paperwork we received for the puppy from the ACO at the shelter belonged to the momma dog who had been killed several days prior - indicating a black, 3 year old female bulldog. Let's recap the crazy: 1. Mom and one pup carried to the shelter by ACO. Mom killed within 24 hours. Paperwork never updated to reflect euthanasia. 2. Littermates, found on the same street, denied services and abandoned by the ACO on private property - after a photo op. 3. Disabled citizen, without resources, forced to feed and care for animals that are not theirs and that they cannot afford. 4. Puppies under 8 weeks required to be vaccinated against rabies before the minimum age of 12 weeks, per ACO. 5.
