This golden chain of arms was made in 1517 for the Herald of the Order of the Golden Fleece. It consists of a typical Order chain made of intertwining fire steels, the emblem of the Order, and stylized flints with flames. Above that chain are 26 rectangular plates with each two coats of arms: since 1516 the Order had 51 members, the Sovereign of the Order had two plates on the chain. After the death of Philip the Fair (1478-1506) his son Charles inherited his titles as Duke of Burgundy and Lord of the Burgundian Netherlands thus making him acting sovereign of the Order of the Golden Fleece. On this chain the two plates above the pendant of the golden fleece have been reserved for Charles, who in 1516 also had inherited the Crowns of Aragon and Castile: one for his personal coat of arms (1: above middle) and the other for his personal motto “Plus Oultre” (1: below middle) accompanied by a crown and yet another fire steel.
