Valentine’s Day - Tokoyami
A/N: I love Tokoyami. So much. Let’s just get that out there real quick. I want to do right by him and I hope I succeeded!
Warnings: absolutely none
February fourteenth had always been a day of bane for Tokoyami Fumikage. Year after year, he was forced to watch as his classmates exchanged chocolates with their crushes. No one wanted to be more than friends with the boy who had a head like a bird’s. Who could he kiss with a beak like his? Going to U.A. hadn’t changed anything, either.
The only chocolates Tokoyami had received had been from Tsu, as a thank you for being a great team player. She considered him a good friend because of how well they always seemed to work together, but nothing extended beyond that. It was fine, he didn’t see her as more than a friend, either.
However, no matter how much he would never let it show, it still hurt. Just once, he wanted someone to give him chocolates because they liked him as more than just a friend. With these thoughts running through his mind, he couldn’t help his gaze from finding you at your desk multiple times throughout the day.
Tokoyami had only one real interaction with you since you’d transferred, but that was all it had taken. He’d fallen pretty hard for you, but he wasn’t about to let it show and endure the teasing of his classmates if he didn’t even know what you thought of him in return. Only Shouji knew about how he felt, but his best friend saw just about everything.
Too bad Shouji didn’t know any more about girls than Tokoyami knew and couldn’t seem to get any sort of read on your emotions at all. So, without a clue, Tokoyami kept quiet and tucked his feelings away deep within himself. He couldn't even bring himself to talk to you outside of basic training.
Before he knew it, the bell rang for lunch and he got up with the rest of his classmates to head for the cafeteria. As they ate, Tokoyami couldn’t help but notice that you were not with them and laughing as you usually did. Your bright laughter was part of what drew him to you; a stark contrast to his darkness was what made it so alluring to him. You never did show up and it concerned him a bit. You weren’t one to skip out on a meal.
As everyone returned to the classroom, however, you were there and packing up your bento. A light flush colored your cheeks and Tokoyami couldn’t help but wonder what you had been up to. It wasn’t long before his question was answered as Kaminari approached your desk with a small box with its ribbon undone.
Your eyes zeroed in on the box, widening in what looked like near horror. “Uh, y/l/n, I’m sorry, but I really can’t accept these. I appreciate the gesture, but I just don’t see you like that.” Kaminari flinched as you shrieked and flew to your feet.
Your hands snatched the box from him. “They weren’t for you, you jerk!” You stared down at the box a little sadly as you checked inside. “Did you eat any of them?” Kaminari shook his head quickly. A sigh of relief escaped you as you carefully closed up the box, again. Your face flushed a deeper red as you moved around your desk.
Tokoyami felt his breath freeze in his lungs as you approached him and held out the small box to him. You couldn’t quite meet his wide-eyed gaze as you spoke quietly. “These were supposed to be for you. I… I guess I got so nervous about giving them to you that I put them in the wrong desk.” Your eyes finally found his as you gave him a small, nervous smile.
Reaching out, Tokoyami carefully took the box from you as though the whole thing would break if he handled it even the slightest bit too roughly. “Thank you.” He was rendered breathless again as you gave him one of your warm smiles before going back to your desk. It was hard for him to look away from your adorably red cheeks to peek inside of the box.
Inside, he didn’t find chocolates. He frowned slightly as he inspected them closer until he realized what they were. A small smile lifted the corners of his mouth as he lifted a small red candy in the shape of a bird from the box. Placing it in his mouth, he was pleasantly surprised that it was apple-flavored. As he let the candy dissolve on his tongue, his eyes were drawn to your handwriting on the inside of the lid. His heart nearly stopped as he read what was written.
“I like you.”
