Michael Lucknerâs âGuitarâ project is exactly as it sounds, a collection of recordings with the main focus being instruments of the guitar family. What I love about Tokyo is itâs implementation of a more ethnic sound with the variety of instruments sampled. At itâs core, Akiko, along with the other tracks off of Tokyo are simple. Weâre presented a collection of short guitar samples layered together and looped over a steady drum pattern. The songs are repetitive and static, but at the same time pleasantly atmospheric. While sometimes a bit on the nose, you canât argue that Luckner manages to paint a mental image of a relaxing, and sometimes haunting Japan. The straightforward melodies stand strong on their own, making for an enjoyable and easily digestible listening experience.
