Woman pursues tie to Titanic's black family
By Tom Berg
HUNTINGTON BEACH – This all started under a hair dryer.
Marjorie Alberts' stepmother was reading Ebony in a Washington, D.C., hair salon in August 2000 when she came across an article about the Titanic.
There, she read about Joseph Laroche, a Haitian engineer who changed tickets at the last minute to board the Titanic.
There, she learned that Laroche was the only black man among the Titanic's 2,223 passengers and crew.
And there, she gasped at Laroche's photograph.
Oh my gosh!

Police Called To City Council Meeting After Berg Scared Colleagues
Honolulu City Council member Tom Berg's angry outbursts during Thursday's Transportation Committee meeting resulted in a 911 call and police responding to City Hall just in case things got out of hand.
We got a tip from someone at the meeting, and KITV had a full report on its 10 o'clock news last night. It's worth clicking over to watch video of what transpired.
It isn't Berg's first run-in with the police since he was elected. In November, HPD video was released showing a belligerent Berg arguing with APEC security. A police report said he smelled of alcohol and appeared drunk.
Berg sent an email this morning explaining yesterday's incident:
Because it is imperative that transparency and clarity be made available to all taxpayers in the City & County of Honolulu and this has always been a contentious issue, I may have been a bit more animated than I should have and it was not my intention yesterday to irritate any city council members during a committee meeting. When I insisted upon some honest discussion and answers about how the iwi situation will be handled and why the costs for land acquisitions have gone up three times- from $90 million to nearly $300 million, it was misconstrued as being disruptive.

Candidates for the Honolulu City Council District 1 seat will gather for a second forum Tuesday.
Tom Berg, Mel Kahele, Kym Pine and Alex Santiago will be in Kapolei, and the event will be broadcast on Olelo. Teenager EJ Delacruz, who did participate in Thursday night's PBS forum, doesn't appear to be included. UPDATE: Delacruz has been invited and will participate in the forum.

Pine Holds First, Schedules Second Fundraiser
State Rep. Kym Pine's campaign for Honolulu City Council held its first fundraiser last night at Ruth's Chris Steakhouse, asking donors for $500 to $2,000 apiece, according to a filing yesterday with the Campaign Spending Commission.
The second fundraiser's not far behind. It's set for next week Wednesday at Kapolei Golf Course. This time, the ask is $50-$100, according to a filing.
Pine's fundraiser Tuesday wasn't just her first. It was also the first in the race. None of her opponents for the District 1 race have yet held any fundraisers asking for more than the minimum donation ($25), according to the CSC. Incumbent Tom Berg scheduled one in February but then canceled it.
