Pastor Tom Chantry

The letter to the Hebrews was written to Christian people whose earthly nation was crumbling and on the brink of collapse. It was intended to soothe their souls with the supremacy of the changeless Christ over every institution of this world. It offers great encouragement to all believers who discover that their nations and their homes are no “abiding city,” reminding us that we are on our desert pilgrimage to Zion.

So America is experiencing race riots again, which is simply awful.

  My heart goes out to the people of Ferguson who are living this nightmare. My heart goes out to the police who risk their lives to protect ours. And my heart goes out to the Body of Christ, which is Black and White and Both and Neither, and in which we are expected to live as one.

  Racial tension always exacerbates our struggle for unity, and racial violence does not bring out the best in any of us. Predictably, genuine Christian pastors of varying political, social, and cultural stripes have weighed in on the riots and their cause, and they have not agreed. Recriminations have followed. I have no desire to enter that fray.

  In the midst of it, Voddie Baucham posted his thoughts on the Gospel Coalition blog, and while many have linked to his thoughts, it seems to me that most who have interacted or evaluated have either misunderstood or misrepresented his statements. It’s fairly obvious that most have read Baucham’s remarks through their own personal tinted goggles, so maybe I have also. But I’ll tell you what I think anyway, because if I’m reading him correctly, he has said some genuinely wonderful things.

Tom Chantry:

When the Psalms are sung, the minister never leaves without hearing a sermon. Psalms are amazing compositions; we would expect nothing else from inspired Scripture. They dig down to the root of truth and press in on the heart of the believer. They apply truth to our condition by urging us to trust and praise the Lord. Each Psalm is a sermon in verse, expounding and applying the truth of God.

  Those of us who minister, particularly in small churches, very often go to the assembly several times on a Lord’s Day and preach the word every time. We could go months at a time without hearing the preaching of the Word. But because my church opens each week with a Psalm, I hear a sermon, ‘preached’ by the choir (which in solid, Reformed fashion is made up of all the congregants singing together). I cannot say how often I am moved beyond expression by the message of the Psalm. I do not feel the lack of a ministry dedicated to my own spiritual needs, my people supply that by singing the Psalm in my direction.

John Frame

As a graduate of Westminster Seminary in California during the mid-1990s, one of the most frequent questions I am asked is some variant of, “What did you think of John Frame?”  The question is unsurprising.  By 1992, when I entered seminary, Frame was among the better-known professors in Escondido.  Just a few years after I graduated he had also left Escondido after a prolonged and not very secret dispute with the Westminster administration – largely over the matter of worship.  Then in 2011 he published The Escondido Theology, a wide-ranging attack on his former employers which suggested that Westminster Seminary in California has departed from Reformed tradition.

That such a colorful figure invites curiosity is not surprising.  Furthermore, Frame is a thinker whose unique philosophical system and its accompanying linguistic usage is not immediately accessible to the reader.  It is to be expected that I hear periodic questions about him.  I have interacted some with these questions online, and following the publication of The Escondido Theology my letter of support for WSC was published on their website.  More recently, though, I have begun to see some Reformed Baptists referencing Frame in a positive light!  This is to my mind a most distressing development.

To lay my cards on the table from the outset let me say this: it is my firm opinion that John Frame is one of the most dangerous characters in the broadly Reformed world today.  His ideas are so disruptive of any system of doctrine and ultimately of any reasonable approach to holiness that I find myself distrusting of those who cite him.  Perhaps this is unfair.  Perhaps they have not read far enough, or understood sufficiently.  But when I see John Frame referenced favorably among those who are meant to be confessional Reformed Baptists, I find that I am terrified by what is coming in our movement.

It is tempting at this point in the story of the Reformed Baptists to press on to the first formal interactions among the young confessional churches in Carlisle and Montville.  However, we should  first consider another influence which soon came to bear on the Reformed Baptist movement.  While it is undeniable that both confessional Presbyterianism and baptistic fundamentalism had an influence on our development, another significant force was at work in the American church during the 1940s and beyond – a movement known as “neo-evangelicalism.”

Trinity Baptist Church Montville, NJ

Trinity Baptist Church, now of Montville, New Jersey, has played a role in the development of Reformed Baptist history comparable to that of Grace Baptist in Carlisle.  In fact, Martin’s power in the pulpit was a major force driving the growth of Reformed Baptist practice in early years.  The constant refrain of the 1970s from a hundred mouths was “Al Martin’s preaching and Today’s Gospel” (the latter being Chantry’s first book).  These were the major influences under which confessional Reformed Baptist practice grew.

  The close fellowship of Grace and Trinity in those early years would last more than a decade.  However, the churches would develop along paths as different from one another as the paths which their pastors had followed into the ministry.
