Rye Lane, Raine Allen-Miller (2023)
Rye Lane. Review.
Perfect populist cinema.
This reviewer is always the first to point out how out of touch the #filmTwitter and festival covering scene is with the trends of what a mainstream audience would want. Rye Lane (2023, UK)
Director: Raine Allen-Miller
Writers: Nathan Bryon & Tom Melia
Mini-review:
It had been a while since I had watched such a refreshing romantic comedy. I'm a sucker for these "meet and spend a whole day together" type of stories, and this movie absolutely pulled the concept off. The two leads have a lot of chemistry and their banter is really fun to watch. There are also a few laugh-out-loud funny scenes, like the one in the restaurant. On top of this, the movie's aesthetics are very stylish and it uses a lot of shots and angles that are quite unusual in the genre. Because of this, the film feels really unique, even if the story is not particularly groundbreaking. Besides the visuals, the witty writing also adds a very special flair to the movie. Thankfully, the movie is only 80 minutes long, so it never overstays its welcome and has the perfect amount of time to develop its lead characters. Do give this a chance if you like rom-coms that offer something different.

Only those with a heart of stone will be able to resist the charms of “Rye Lane,” a real charmer of a debut feature from director Raine Allen-Miller. Written by Nathan Bryon and Tom Melia, this vibrant, witty romantic comedy ushers in a breath of fresh air for the genre. Love hurts and relationships aren’t easy, and twentysomethings Dom (David Jonsson) and Yas (Vivian Oparah) are both in a daze…
