Watching Instant Star when you're in your 30's is vastly different than when you're in your teens.
Jude: "Sai essere un vero rompiscatole, Quincy. Ma non c'è niente che cambierei in te"
I’ll never get over Tommy basically grabbing jude’s hair in fistfuls when kissing her this show deserves a reboot it’s so underrated.
I finally started watching schitts creek and all I can see is lil tommy q 😍😂
Does anyone remember this show or was this just a fever dream I had?
I was just thinking about the show Instant Star and I don’t know if anyone even remembers it, but it was wild. Like, the basic premise is this 15 year old, Jude, wins a talent competition and gets a record deal and falls in love with her early twenties producer who is a kind of washed up boy band member, Tommy.
The thing is, teenage me totally shipped these two with all my heart. The show wanted you to. I mean, they don’t end up together, but that’s seen as like a twist and we’re supposed to be sad that this now maybe-20 year old doesn’t end up with the older man in a position of power over her that she met when she was 15. Oh, and said older man has a mysterious past and anger issues and completely gaslights her all the fucking time. He’s also, like, super jealous whenever she shows even the slightest interest in anyone but him, yet constantly tells her they will never happen. Then he dates her SISTER who is 18, but she’s still in high school at the time so it’s still really creepy even if you eliminate the fact that he’s dating the SISTER of the 15 year old he has feelings for. And when him and the sister break-up, Jude is now almost legal so he starts laying the groundwork by explaining to her that him and her sister would never have worked because clearly he’s just so in love with Jude.
There was also this guy Jamie who was actually her age, but he was the pinnacle of the ‘nice guy’ archetype and they actually validate his entitlement a bunch of times and she even dates him at some point in the show.
Aside from all of that, which we don’t have anymore time to unpack because it’s just a lot and there is so much more and this is just what I’m remembering from years ago and I think there were only like 4 or 5 seasons so it was A LOT.
Aside from that, almost every episode had an original song that usually related to the main theme of the episode i.e. why am I, a teenager, more emotionally mature than this supposed adult? The songs were actually kind of amazing and I still have some on different playlists I still listen to. The main girl is played by this girl Alexz Johnson who is super talented and, in hindsight, is one of the first women I had a crush on. And I was all for all the ridiculous drama when I didn’t know about things like grooming and gaslighting and just all the predatory things the characters in this show did.
This didn’t really have a point other than to say that it was all wild and the weirdest part is they kind of Cassandra Clare’d it by making us root for a relationship that should not happen. Side note: we really don’t talk about how Cassandra Clare made 12 year olds root for incest. I mean, I know she kind of copped out by saying they weren’t related after all, which c’mon Cassandra. You wrote about an incestual relationship. Don’t try and erase it in a later book. Don’t be a coward.
This had no point and I am now going on more tangents. Though, if someone miraculously reads this to this point and wants to talk about Instant Star, message me. Let’s have Jude/Tommy discourse and discuss why Kwest was the best character.
I'm rewatching Instant Star again and honestly idk why I ever shipped Jude and Tommy. Their relationship is so damn gross and he's a predator. He had a thing for her since she was like 15 and we all know what happend at her Unsweet 16. Then it was as so fucked up how he went back and forth between her and her sister. The show is so good but their relationship being so front and center sometimes throw me off.
