“A useful analogy that is often used in Chinese medicine to describe Qi flow is that of a river. A river has a source and it follows its course ultimately towards the sea. As it flows it will vary from shallow to deep, quick flowing to slow flowing, while following the most ‘natural’ path.
Chinese philosophy believes that Qi permeates everything in the universe – there is nothing that is not a manifestation of Qi. Thus, Qi must permeate every microcosm of the human body, but there will be varying concentrations of Qi. It is perhaps useful to consider the meridian system as representing areas of high Qi concentration.
Thus, as you move away from any given channel you do not suddenly reach an ‘edge’ – it is more a matter of moving from areas of high Qi concentration to ones of lower Qi concentration. This is similar to the way in which, as you move away from the centre of a river, the water becomes progressively more shallow and even when you move beyond the obvious physical boundary of the river there is still moisture contained within the soil.”
