Welcome to the Tomb of Kings in the city of Paphos, southwest of the island of Cyprus. While I will have a separate post on the amazing history of Paphos, this is a must see when visiting Cyprus and here is why. * * * The Tombs of the Kings is a large necropolis and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. For those that are unsure as to what a necropolis is, it is a large designed cemetery with elaborate tomb monuments and the name derives from the Ancient Greek νεκρόπολις, literally meaning "city of the dead". * * * The underground tombs, cut into the solid native rock and at times imitating the houses of the living, date back to the 4th century BC. They are thought to have been the burial sites of Paphitic aristocrats and high officials up to the third century AD (the name comes from the grandeur of the tombs; no kings were actually buried here). * * * Today achaeological excavations are still being carried out at the site and there is a fee of 2.50EUR to enter the grounds, which is well worth the stop.
