Dans ce pays, dans cette famille, on joint les mains et on prie avant de commencer le repas. On remercie Dieu, on s'en remet à lui. Allison est le prénom que l'on souffle entre les lèvres - celle pour laquelle on demande aide et clémence. Son père Bill, qui a perdu son emploi dans les forages pétroliers, va la rejoindre. Allison est en prison. Loin de l'Oklahoma; à Marseille. Virginie, une belle femme bourgeois-bohème le rencontre par hasard, avec sa fille Maya, et le prend sous son aile. Opiniâtre et ombrageux, il veut aider sa fille, qu'il veut croire innocente du crime dont on l'accuse, à sortir de prison. Mais sa fille ne lui fait guère confiance ... et Marseille est une jungle. C'est un beau film sur l'apprivoisement des contrastes, sur les lumières du silence, de l'errance, sur l'espoir tenace, malgré tout. Un film sur la France et l'Amérique comme on en voit très peu, sur la danse singulière de leurs cultures, proches et étrangères. Sur l'amour qui dure, ou pas, sur les fêlures des coeurs et de la vie. Matt Damon est touchant en mâle paumé et gentil, subjugué par l'amitié solaire de la jeune Maya. Un cadeau tout en retenue, sans apprêt, magistralement sensible.
