‘Castles In the Sky’ Anthology

Here we have the ‘Castles in the Sky’ anthology from No Brainz Comics, it is a collection of stuff by Australian comix creators and theres really not a single dud in the book.  Its a classic old school xeroxed, folded, and stapled comic.  Good ol 11 x 17 folded in half and given a cover that is a little more ambitious in its printing than the xeroxed stuff inside; fucking classic.  First thing that caught my eye, and made me feel all warm and fuzzy, upon opening the book was that signature sheen and reflective surface ya get from solid blacks on a xerox printer.  It shows the love, this damn thing was printed by a machine and put together by hand and its got those god damn shiny blacks and all is good in the world. 

And as I said, theres really not a dud in the book.  Micro published anthologies can always be hit or miss, with its one or two centerpiece stories by some vibrant and up and coming talent and then a bunch of crap from upstarts, but this is a collection of serious stuff from some serious talent showing off their said serious stuff.  Its got Simon Hanselmann, who is always a winner and delivers with a neat 2 pager about caterpillar butt drugs, and opens with another fantastic 2 pager from Lee Lai that is just a humdinger let me tell ya.  Its got the vibe, its got the emotion, Lai’s little piece is so subtle and great. 

But the real monster is the Tommi PG story near the end of the book.  A vignette about an old lady on a nothing day, of which I’m assuming she has many because Im assuming the tale is about being retired or living a life of leisure or something like that but what the hell do I know, that is so exquisitely composed and followed through its a goddamn sonata of a comic.  Tommi PG has this great knack for the big body tiny head thing and this story is just a beaut.  

And theres’ other surprises within as well.  The dream comic, which at first I was worried was one of those standard bits where the anthology falls into amateur land, was absolutely a treat and the cover art is a real humdinger as well.  Nothing but good stuff to say and not gonna get very deep in the thoughts today either because I’m sick and fuzzy with a fever so I can’t tap too good into the juice right now but this was an alright review anyway, eh?  

This is a great anthology and I am really glad I came across it.  Its only 5 bucks cheap!!  Its in its second printing and its by folks that live far far away from this here USA I’m living in so do yourself a treat and mail order a copy or two of this great comic book: http://salarymancomics.storenvy.com/products/17848154-castles-in-the-sky
