Tonik Ensemble - “Landscapes”

If there's one thing that Iceland Airwaves taught me, it's that the small island has an impressive home team. Then again, they're the nation that birthed both Björk and Sigur Ros—so this probably isn't a huge surprise. (If you think otherwise you probably can't sit with me.) But of all the crazy/cool/utterly impressive acts I saw across five days, I was left thinking about Tonik Ensemble. Downtempo electro with live sax: This is exactly the kind of track that makes me wish I lived in a climate cold enough to properly experience winter melancholy.

With the lack of a big-name Icelandic show, the sixteen annual edition of the fest became an excellent hunting ground for new and upcoming artists. Outsiders may still see Iceland as a magical place—and certainly the sheer amount of top shelf talent the island produces does seem to indicate a touch of supernatural. But very few of the new class of Icelandic artists could have the word “ethereal” attached to their music.
