freddie’s    not    old    enough    to    be    at    this    party.    though    his    physical    youth    is    masked    (he’s    lucky    enough    to    have    hit    puberty    early—    luckier    still    to    be    past    the    phase    where    his    voice    breaks),    he’s    green    when    it    comes    to    the    type    of    activities    that    effy’s    brother    and    his    friends    get    up    to.   

he    plays    cool    enough,    despite    the    fact    that    it’s    well    known    tony    invited    him    and    cook    for    a    bit    of    a    laugh.    he’s    recently    picked    up    the    habit    of    smoking,    and    is    relieved    that    when    the    cigarette    is    passed    to    him    in    the    circle    they’re    sitting    in,    he’s    able    to    inhale    without    coughing    up    a    storm.

he    turns    to    pass    the    cigarette    to    the    person    next    to    him.    he    recognizes    the    girl—    first,    because    she’s    cute,    and    second,    because    she’s    always    hanging    around    tony.    but    he    can’t    quite    place    her    name.    his    ears    turn    a    bright    shade    of    red,    but    he’s    happy    the    room    is    too    dark    to    show    anything.

“here    —”    he    says,    because    the    girl    seems    kind    of    spaced    out,    like    she    hasn’t    noticed    the    stick    right    in    front    of    her    face.    freddie    shuffles,    self    conscious.
