Tool Tuesdays: Sleeve Board
A sleeve board is a skinny ironing board made specifically for pressing sleeves! If you’ve ever struggled with pressing sleeves on a regular ironing board and accidentally ironing creases into the sides of your sleeve, this is the tool you need to prevent that. There are solid and collapsible varieties. Collapsible ones tend to be cheaper but also tougher to get a full-length sleeve over because they’re a little short, whereas solid ones are more expensive and bulkier but easier to iron on.
Until recently I used a collapsible sleeve board that I found at a thrift store ($2!). (I made it a cover to match my big ironing board, the cover it came with was ugly.)
I liked this one a lot because it had a relatively long length of space between the end of the board and the hinge, and also a sturdy wooden base. You can get similar ones with hollow bases off of Amazon for around $7-15, but I’m not sure how well those perform if you’re really leaning into them with your iron.
I’ve been in the market for a new solid sleeve board for a while now and I ended up going with this one for $43.
One of the reviews complained of the cast aluminum base having rough edges and snagging their fabric, so to head that off before it became a problem I ended up dremeling off the aluminum burs left from sloppy casting.
It’s a minor tweak but a little bit of a pain in the butt. With a price tag of $43 I feel like this shouldn’t have to be done by the consumer, but once that correction was made I was really happy with the sturdiness of the board and the ability to completely fit a full-length sleeve without wrinkling over the ironing surface. That’s the major advantage over the collapsible board I have.
Definitely a useful tool to have in whatever form matches your price point!
