Top/Bottom Dynamics And Fandom Problems

Ok so can we stop viewing tops as predominantly aggressive assholes??? And can we stop viewing bottoms as predominantly weak crybabies??? Tops don’t have to be that way, there’s legit no requirement to be a top other than “the one who sticks it in”, no “top personality”, no checklist of character traits one needs to be a top. The same goes for bottoms! Tops don’t have to be conventionally masculine, and bottoms don’t have to be conventionally feminine. Also, tops are not synonymous with doms, and bottoms are not synonymous with subs.

Let tops be submissive and bottoms be dominant. Let tops be soft and gentle, getting pleasure from making their bottoms feel good, being patient and careful, loving the feeling of being the only one who can make their bottom come undone like that! Let bottoms be smug and seductive, enjoy being practically worshipped and pleasured by their top, enjoy seducing them and making them aroused, enjoy the power a seductive bottom can have, enjoy the fact that their needs are being catered to.

Let us have gentle tops, service tops, pleasure-giving tops, smitten, lovestruck, “wrapped-around-their-bottom’s-finger” tops! Let us have in-control bottoms, power bottoms, seductive bottoms, bottoms who enjoy being pleasured and served, bottoms who tease their tops, bottoms who have their tops wrapped around their finger. Let us have tops who are awkward, tops who are virgins, tops who blush easily and get nervous, tops who’re cheerful and good-natured, tops who ask before doing anything, tops who get tongue-tied by how beautiful/handsome their bottom is, tops who are emotional, tops who’re shorter/skinnier/generally smaller. Let us have bottoms who’re maybe a bit more pessimistic, bottoms who’re taller/chubbier/buffer/generally bigger, bottoms who’re more cynical, bottoms who’re aggressive, bottoms who aren’t doe-eyed and innocent, bottoms who’re experienced with sex, bottoms who know exactly what they want and how to get it, bottoms who are serious, bottoms with an attitude.

That’s not to say that we can’t have domineering tops and submissive bottoms (that’s basically the norm in fics and art etc.), it’s just that we need variety! Don’t say a character “can’t be a top/bottom” just cuz they don’t fit the stereotypes of a top/bottom. Realise that there are different types of tops and bottoms, and that there’s no personality requirement to be either one!

Plus, people are multifaceted. Maybe a usually aggressive person is a submissive and pleasure-driven bottom in the bedroom. Maybe a usually shy person is a dominant and experimental top in the bedroom. You never know, and you never will know unless it’s mentioned canonically, and even then switching is always on the table.

So.....let’s all just stop putting down each other’s headcanons about which character would be a top and which character would be a bottom, because the fact is that they could be either one, or switches. It has nothing to do with their personality traits or how they act or how strong they are or how big they are. Let’s stop placing requirements on who gets to be a top/bottom. There are so many different types of top/bottom dynamics.....let’s not limit our ships to just one! Let everyone have their own headcanons, please and thank you.

Let People Have Their Own Top/Bottom HCs

Ok so I just saw a post saying that Katsuki Bakugou being a bottom would be “character assassination”. Like....why? Why is hc-ing someone as a bottom character assassination? You do realise that bottoms can have legit any personality?

Also why is everyone so hellbent on pretending that Katsuki can’t be a bottom? I find it strange that no one calls Izuku being depicted as a meek, submissive bottom character assassination. Or do people really think Izuku’s submissive and weak??? He’s not. Even before getting a quirk, even when he was being bullied by Katsuki, he was never submissive. He protected other kids, he stood up for others, he was a hero even then. Most depictions I’ve seen make him so quivering and meek, and after all the determination and strength he’s shown, I just can’t see him being depicted like that, it just doesn’t fit how I see him. Also I just prefer Top!Izuku and Bottom!Katsuki! Still, I don’t mind other people hc-ing Izuku however they want.

Katsuki Bakugou can absolutely be a bottom without it assassinating his character. You all do realise that (1) people are multifaceted and (2) bottoms can be strong and in control of the situation and have their tops wrapped around their finger too??? Actually, just read this, please. Plus, most depictions of Bottom!Katsuki retain his own personality brilliantly while he’s bottoming, as well as retaining Izuku’s personality while he’s topping!

There is no criteria to be a top or a bottom. They are not synonyms for dom and sub either. And also, stop assuming that you’ve got a character’s position down pat when it’s not canon (even then they could be switches).

Katsuki’s personality tells us nothing about his preferred position, because his personality is not a criteria to be either a top or a bottom. We don’t know what their preferred positions would be based off of personality, because personality isn’t a criteria in sexual positions.

Therefore, you have no right to tell other people that their hc is “character assassination” when your own hc is just as implausible/plausible (Top!Katsuki and Bottom!Izuku ain’t canon either, people), and when character has nothing to do with their preferred sexual positions (please don’t disrespect other people’s hcs ever, actually). We can hc a character as whatever we want, and in terms of sexual positions it’s much easier because there are different types of tops and bottoms with varying personalities and characteristics and preferences, and we don’t know their sexual position for sure until it’s canon, and even then switching is always in the cards.

Sorry I got so worked up writing this, I was just so mad that anyone could put down an hc like that, as if their own hc is God’s word or something. Bottom!Katsuki/Top!Izuku is just as plausible and valid as Top!Katsuki/Bottom!Izuku (and let’s not forget the wonders of switching). So please, stop putting arbitrary, made-up limitations on who can be a top or a bottom, and stop putting restrictions on my boys and their preferred positions in the bedroom. Let everyone have their headcanons, and please just respect each other’s headcanons. We don’t know what Katsuki or Izuku prefer and enjoy in the bedroom, so let’s just have fun coming up with different, varied hcs instead of restricting ourselves to one interpretation. After all, fandom life would be boring if we just limited all shippers to one interpretation of a ship :3
