AALIYA WHY u know it’s impossible right I’ve read so many AUs and written some and how can I pick favourites honestly how dare you!!! uhhhh oKAY LET’S DO THIS
since it’d be TOO MUCH to try and pick only 6 of my favourite AU fics let’s talk about AUs in general
canon-divergent AUs. I’m a sucker for these for obvious otp reasons - this way a certain archangel gets to keep being an archangel, and since he had so little time in canon there can never be enough canon-divergent AUs yfm. but, sabriel aside, I think that canon divergence provides every fandom with tons of opportunities to explore things and characters canon barely scratched the surface of, as well as fix all those plotholes canon writers make as if they get paid based on their number.
creature AUs. give me all your dragons and meerfolk and witches and pagans and all sorts of creatures and things! these AUs, if done right, can be absolutely and utterly fascinating, and I simply adore the way some writers mix a character’s canon traits with their creature personality. give me a hefty amount of worldbuilding on top and you won’t be able to drag me away from the fic till I finish it.
movie/fairytale AUs are also great bc like you might have never thought of your otp in terms of a movie or a fairytale but then you read an AU and it just??? fits so perfectly??? and you’re screaming internally bc how have you NOT REALIZED THIS BEFORE OMG
okay so this is something I am absolutely WEAK for bc this is the kind of stories I write mostly - parallel/multiple universes and multiverse AUs. the main charm for me here is ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN. literally. anything. that’s what multiverse theory is all about and I love love LOVE it when characters are thrown into some multiverse-level shitstorm with some means/ability to travel between the worlds and THAT’S WHERE THE MOST INTERESTING SHIT HAPPENS.
all-human, regular life AUs - and yes this includes the coffeeshop AUs like yeah I know it’s an overused trope but I’ll never get tired of it or any other regular life AUs because honestly all I ever want for my favourite characters is to live full lives, go through all sorts of emotional turmoil and find happiness on their way.
soulmate AUs but with a twist - not the common trope of names written on wrists, but - what if it’s pictures? what if it’s confusing as all hell? what happens if your soulmate dies before you meet them? what about those with a big age gap between them? do you get just one soulmate per life or there are instances when there’s more than one? do you meet them again and fall in love with them again when you reincarnate? I’m more interested in all the worldbuilding opportunities of the soulmate AUs to be honest, and I haven’t seen that many of those, but I’d love to see someone (okay okay FINE I’d love to write one if I have time but I’ve none so) take the soulmate AU trope to a next level and really explore all the details of a soulmate world and all the possible plot twists it provides.
honourable mention goes to dystopian AUs. I never really liked them because everyone’s miserable and life is tough and about survival and shit but like. there’s this one AU. it’s about angel robots and shit. and it’s a dystopia and I’m in love with it and it makes me ANGRY bc I don’t even like dystopias and once again how dare you Aaliya
