Top 5 stories, other than Lord of the Rings and Star Wars?

Oh gosh Okay that leaves out two 😭

Well actually that still makes number one SUPER EASY for me

1. Avatar the last Airbender

Name a story that does found family better? Atla is by far one of my favorite stories in media. I love that it's a story about friendship, and holding on to compassion in some of the darkest times. Aang is such a wonderful protagonist and I adore the series and expanding world so much. Its a show I turn to a lot when I want to feel good. There's a lot of love and attention to detail that went into those characters and I love every ounce of it.

2. The Percy Jackson book series

I'm specific on BOOK here because the movies HURT me, but again I love the found family theme. I grew up with Percy. I started reading them in middle school, and started Heroes of Olympus as I went through high school. Riordan has done well in listening to his fans and letting other authors tell their stories and I think thats pretty great. Like I said, I really like the found family in this one

3. Ughhhh this is getting more difficult but I think I'm going to give this one to The Lizzie Bennet Diaries.

Yes its a modern retelling of Pride and Prejudice without all the wonderful costuming, but you asked for top 5 stories, and this version I'm picking is because of the story and how its told. If you haven't seen it, its all on YouTube done in the form of vlogs from aspiring communications grad student Lizzie Bennet. My roommates introduced it to me and I just fell in love with how the story unfolded. Like I know the story of Pride and Prejudice but I liked not knowing how they were going to put a modern spin on things. Its the switching hats and props to show different characters, and its just a fun watch.

4. The Hobbit

Technically you said excluding Lord of the Rings, and the Hobbit is a different story so HA! I include this one because even though I've always liked LotR I didn't get REALLY into it until the Hobbit movies came out. It was a story I needed to read and see in high school. Most books and movies and shows I was watching at the time had things ending on the best possible note, a lot of 'fairy tales ending type things where the protagonist got everything they wanted (for the most part). And then the Hobbit came out and I read Thorin's story (in the movie) as a foreshadowing for Aragorn and so I didn't think anything of it until Battle of the Five armies came out. AND I LEFT THE THEATER IN TEARS. I was furious and so I got a hold of the book, determined to find out the ending was just for dramatics only to find myself crying as I read the end. It was a good story I needed at the time, to know that "Its okay to not feel okay after going through a rough time"

5. Five was hard for me to pick, but I'm going to actually say The Legend of Korra.

Now I know this show hits different for a lot of people, BUT with the instability going on behind the scenes I think the story they told was great. I'm gonna be honest, I still haven't finished it, because I know most of what happens and I'm not sure I'll ever be mentally prepared for old lady Toph. I think something to remember is that this was a kids show, but the themes the show attempts to tackle are incredibly complex. I love Korra and I wish her story had the same kind of support Aang's had.

My Five Favorite Dungeon characters in descending order.

Dungeon, Top Five Fave #4

Ababakar Octoflea, Prince Without Principality, Who Stomps on the Tombs of Kings/ the Sword of Destiny, from "Duck Heart (Zenith Series Volume 1 and others). 

   Ababakar gets to represent the sword of destiny because he's the first wearer we see and (maybe a spoiler alert but not really cause it happens on like, page 4) he dies in a greatly unlucky, fate-slap-in-the-face type way. Plus I knew it'd be fun to draw a jacked up cat. 

   The Sword of Destiny is part of what makes Dungeon so special. It's such a weird fantasy weapon. It draws out the former barer when touched, which is pretty fantasy standard, but the belt itself can also talk and is a total douche who doesn't like the protagonist. It also has a set of frustrating rules like- the wearer must accomplish three great deeds before they can draw the sword, but also the wearer can't use any other weapon while wearing the belt or they will be struck by lightening. All in all it's a cool little thing the series rides on and also provides a great showcase for Sfar and Trondheim to come up with some great characters. 

  Disclaimer: the headless Kochak archer there just missed the top five but I still wanted to draw him- so that's my tribute.

Dungeon, Top Five Fave #5

   The Post Office Pigeon(?) from "Back in Style (Dungeon Zenith Book 3)", pictured here with his warrior buddies the Stork and Owl. I love the pigeon, because he's a loser, who strikes it big with characters he obviously idolizes. He's also responsible for this line:

 "My only adventure with eroticism and violence was the day when my Mom caught me wanking and gave me a smack. I'm lucky to have these new friends"

Some thoughts on Dungeon

  For those that don't know: Dungeon is a whimsical fantasy comic series created by Joann Sfar and Lewis Trondheim. Originally published in France, it's kinda hard to explain exactly what it's about in a short space so: Wikipedia.

   I remember first buying Dungeon based on the recommendation of my sequential art professor Brian Ralph back in college. I also remember being really disappointed when it came. I thought the drawings were crappy and the story was weird. I shelved it for a few years, and when I picked it back up, (no doubt in need for new reading material on the john) it was like I was reading a different book. I fell in love at second sight with the wide variety of wacky fantasy creatures; the unorthodox writing and characters; and the beautiful cartooning my stupid self had dubbed crappy. I also appreciate the fact they bring in various artists to draw the series.

Top Five Fave Guidelines

  I'm starting a new series this week called "Top Five Faves" to help me post more regularly, draw a greater variety of things more regularly, and poop more regularly. Top Five Faves will highlight My Five Favorite characters from some of my favorite books, shows, movies and comics. Each character will come with a little description of why they're a Fave so that you have another thing to gloss over while you're looking at your timeline. Some guidelines for Top Fave Five: 

-This is a subjective exercise for me to explore what exactly draws me to characters and story lines, not a definitive ranking of the subjects' best characters. I leave all definitive top five rankings to god. 

- I don't necessarily like my Top Five Fave characters, it's about who I find interesting or exciting within their story. 

- Characters aren't ranked based on importance to the story, they may be important, they may be a character that only appears for a second and never again. I think part of what makes some characters so appealing is wanting to see more of them.

- Sometimes, I'll squeeze more than one character into a number. I realize it's a cop out but I don't care, I do what I want. 

- I haven't always read or seen the whole series I'm picking favorite characters for. So that may be the reason why your favorite isn't on the list. It may also be that they're not my favorite. Again, not totally fair but, whatever. 

- If you're left scratching your head at why someone made the list, you may get dandruff on your shoulders. Please use the appropriate level of caution. 

- I will post a new character every 3-4 days or so (lol, nope), maybe, at 5:55 pm eastern time (starting April 3, 2014). Once a subject wraps up I will post a text-free Five-Fave compilation album post.
