So it looks like lots of different people do lots of different things to prepare for surgery. Based upon my research, my personal feelings, and the surgeon’s and anesthesiologist’s recommendations, here’s what I did to prep:
- I avoided alcohol for 2 weeks pre-surgery and will be avoiding it for 2 weeks following surgery. This is supposed to boost my immune system and reduce bruising.
- I tried my best to avoid sodium for the week before and will be trying to avoid it for a week after. This is supposed to reduce swelling. (I really only manage to keep it to about 50% of the recommended daily intake. Salt is hard for me to avoid!)
- I took Bromelaine and Arnica supplements for a week before and will take them for at least a week after surgery, probably longer. They are both supposed to reduce inflammation and bruising.
- I did my best to stay VERY hydrated pre-surgery and will do the same after.
- I upped my daily push-ups I increase every 10 days, I’m currently doing 34 per day. This is supposed to help shape my pecs and give the surgeon a good idea of where my muscle falls/the contours of my chest.
- I tried to greatly increase my intake of fiber and fruit for the week before surgery and will continue this after. The pain killers/antibiotics(?) are constipating (I’ve heard) so just trying to address that as much before hand. I considered starting stool softeners 2 days before the surgery, but decided just to start taking them as soon as I am able to after the surgery.
