The hullabaloo around the departure of host Jeremy Clarkson ? remember, the self-inflicted error that brought to an end one of the most popular shows in the English-speaking world ? has settled down just enough that the BBC is ready to showcase the final filmed works of Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond?at least on its channels.
Consisting of two adventures that were to be part of the final season, the chopped-together ?special? will find the trio buying classic small sports cars (Fiat 124 Spyder, Peugeot 304 Cabriolet and MGB GT) and near-junkyard SUVs (Vauxhall Frontera, Jeep Cherokee and Mitsubishi Shogun Pinin) to embark for the expected hijinks and shameful failures.
According to Top Gear, the show will not include the other essentials of the series ? no Stig, no Star in a Reasonably Priced Car ? but will include footage from Hammond and May, in studio sans Clarkson or an audience. So far there?s no word yet on when the special will run.
Since the dust-up, tensions on all sides seemed to have calmed; Clarkson has reiterated his love of the BBC, the BBC has expressed its gratitude, and the trio was working together last weekend on one of their live stadium shows. It seems inevitable that there will be some kind of entertainment, likely headed by former producer Andy Wilman, from the gang at some point in the not-so-distant future. But for now, the final Clarkson-era Top Gear will have to do.
